Recruiting Report: Jeremiah Hernandez (2019)
St. Viator 2019 small forward Jeremiah Hernandez continues to improve each time we see him. We have evaluated him twice early in the season and his stock continues to rise. Offensively he a versatile prospect that can score in a variety of ways. Smooth looking jump shot pulling up off the bounce. Slippery with the rock in his hand being able to get through traffic and score in the paint. Could add some more upper body strength to finish through contact better. His passing was flat out explosive! This season we have seen growth in his passing and overall not forcing things as a scorer. Defensively he contests shots with his length and even blocks threes on occasion. Cuts passing lanes that he takes the other way for transition dunks. Projects as a really good mid-major prospect.
Hernandez spoke about his early season play.
“I think I am doing good getting my teammates involved, scoring, and being a leader overall.”
Where has he improved the most?
“Being a leader vocally and leading by example. I have got a little bit stronger with my weight coach. Shooting the ball from mid-range and stretching it out to three.”
Hernandez passing has really impressed us.
“Our offense is five out so it really gets us moving the ball so it allows me to make plays which is something I am good at.”
He ran with Young & Reckless during July.
“July with Young & Reckless was great. That was the right move for me. They took me in right away and made me feel like family. Got the college coaches involved. Got Southern Illinois offer early.”
Where do things stand with recruiting?
“Recruiting is good. I have the four offers from Cal Poly, Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois, and Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Milwaukee came to our Thanksgiving tournament and I put on a show for them and they offered. Coach Baldwin said he liked what he saw. Some of the high-majors are starting to get involved. I was at the Wisconsin game against Yale recently. Northwestern has been talking and coming to some open gyms. Minnesota came to some open gyms.”
Hernandez broke down his visit to Wisconsin.
“Wisconsin was great. They showed love. The Kohl Center is the best arena I have ever been in. The locker room was great. The campus was great. I loved Madison.”
We spoke with the junior wing about three schools that have offered him.
Northern Illinois
“I like Coach Chapman. He has been recruiting me heavy. I like Coach Montgomery. I got to play with their guys a little and see the system that they run. I think I could fit well there.”
SIU
“Coach Clancy is a guy known around Illinois. He likes what he has seen in me. Coach Barry Hinson I met him and he is a real great guy. Campus is nice down in Carbondale. The arena is awesome.”
Wisconsin-Milwaukee
“Coach Monaghan, Coach Parham, and Coach Baldwin when I went up there showed me around and treated me like family. They did a real good job selling Milwaukee.”
