At 3:00 pm, the second boys game of the BSE Sports Greenwood Golden Eagle Holiday Classic featured the Woodmont Wildcats vs. the Saluda Tigers. Both teams have youthful rosters, starting only one senior each (Woodmont: Reggie Young SF | Saluda: Zack Johnson F).
Similar to the Midland Valley vs. Gilbert match, both teams had slow starts on offense and played effective zone defense. Zach Johnson (2018) set the tone early by administering his will in the paint on both ends. Kennan Brooks (2020) immediately took over as a floor general; shooting well from distance and distributing the rock to his teammates. Woodmont held their own and answered back with the help of Reggie Young (2018) and Ahmad Geter , but they trailed 13-11 at the end of the first quarter. At the start of the 2nd quarter, Brooks continued to lead the charge and took matter into his own hands; he drove to the basket and earned a few trips to the free throw line. At the five minute mark, Woodmont trailed 23-16. They decided to switch into a full court press and it paid off. They created a few turnovers and came to within two possessions of the lead. Saluda held off their surge and went into halftime up 30-26. The turning point in the game came in the 4th quarter. The Wildcats went 5 scoreless minutes and the Tigers capitalized by taking a 49-33 lead before Woodmont got their next field goal. Woodmont surged back and bridged the gap as best the could, but they fell short. Saluda won 55-44.
MVP: Kennan Brooks (2020) PG
Keenan Brooks will be a name that draws interest in the next few years. He shot the ball efficiently, orchestrated every half court set and played well beyond his years. Brooks did everything one could ask for from a point guard. For that, he was the MVP without a doubt.
