Notebook: Bob Wettig Day 2
The Bob Wettig Memorial Tournament is annually one of the best in Indiana during the holidays. This year we will see another very good line up as two defending state champions are in the field, Attucks and Tindley. Along with them we will see Cathedral, Connersville, Greensburg, Richmond, and Shelbyville. All of these teams have a chance to win and along with the teams there are some very good players to watch such as Christian Harvey, Eric Hunter, Jarron Coleman, and Jamal Harris. It is sure to be a good three days of hoops.
Game 1: SB Adams 48, Indy NW Homeschool 40
SB Adams struggled to open up the game and couldn’t get anything to really fall but in the second half they broke the NW Homeschool press really well and opened it up. NW Homeschool almost came back in the end after a barrage of three-pointers midway through the fourth quarter. NW Homeschool turned the ball over down by five with two minutes remaining and SB Adams took advantage running out the clock.
Top Performers:
Shakell Johnson | SB Adams | 2019 6’1 SF – 15 points
Alec Breiler | SB Adams | 2018 6’6 PF – 10 points
Ryan Segall | Indy NW Homeschool | 2019 6’10 C – 9 points, 12 rebounds
Brandon Winchester | Indy NW Homeschool | 2018 5’9 PG – 9 points
Game 2: Belmont (OH) 60, Indy Lighthouse 50
Belmont (OH) came out quick and Lighthouse responded to their early flurry and never let Belmont get out to more than a four-point lead at any time throughout the first three quarters. Lighthouse never led at any point at the end of the quarters but they battled to take the lead in the fourth. Jadon Furlow wouldn’t let Indy Lighthouse sneak out with a win as he blocked two shots and scored six of his points in the frame.
Top Performers:
Dontez Rayner | Indy Lighthouse | 2018 6’4 SG – 24 points, 8 rebounds
Jadon Furlow | Belmont (OH) | 2018 6’2 SG – 16 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks
Jeremy Henderson | Indy Lighthouse | 2018 6’2 SG – 13 points
Ajani Smith | Indy Lighthouse | 2019 6’4 PF – 12 points, 7 rebounds
Game 3: Greensburg 77, Franklin Central 65
To this point, this was the most well balanced and most talented game of the day. It was full of really good underclassmen such as Mason Gonzales and Andrew Welage as well as a solid junior class. Franklin Central stayed close to Greensburg behind and barrage of three-point shooting but just fell apart in the fourth quarter leading to Greensburg getting out to a huge lead and Franklin Central playing from behind.
Top Performers:
Drew Comer | Greensburg | 2019 6’4 SG – 31 points, 5 rebounds
Andrew Welage | Greensburg | 2020 6’5 SF – 26 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals
Mason Gonzales | Franklin Central | 2021 6’ PG – 14 points, 3 assists
Isiah Morgan | Franklin Central | 2019 6’3 SG – 12 points
Game 4: Indianapolis Homeschool 68, Seton Catholic 39
Seton Catholic was very outmatched in this one as their run they have had the last 5-6 years is now over. Homeschool has some very interesting players and Seton Catholic is just depleted. Homeschool ran away with it in the first quarter and took complete control going into the last three quarters. Just a game where one team was so much better than the other.
Top performers:
Mitchell Wirts | Homeschool | 2020 6’4 PF – 18 points
Sam Brenneke | Seton Catholic | 2019 6’2 SG – 17 points
Noah Shook | Homeschool | 2020 5’10 PG – 16 points
Myles Johnson | Homeschool | 2018 6’5 SF – 15 points
Game 5: Cathedral 68, Shelbyville 63
Shelbyville was on fire in this game. They hit 15-of-24 from deep and at one point made five in a row. It was only a matter of time until Cathedral used their length and pulled themselves back into it. Shelbyville had a double-digit lead in the third quarter but Armaan Franklin took over in the third quarter and really propelled Cathedral to the victory. He was really good and played better than anyone on the day.
Top Performers:
Armaan Franklin | Cathedral | 2019 6’5 SG – 29 points, 12 rebounds, 4 steals
Jarron Coleman | Cathedral | 2018 6’5 SF – 29 points, 10 rebounds
Josh Williams | Shelbyville | 2019 6’ PG – 20 points, 5 rebounds
Zach Kuhn | Shelbyville | 2019 6’4 SF – 17 points
Game 6: Connersville 58, Attucks 51
Connersville led wire-to-wire and Attucks just couldn’t get anything to go down. Connersville slowed the pace down and Attucks couldn’t adjust. Connersville also hit big shots down the stretch while Attucks was closing the gap. Attucks didn’t have any dunks in the game and that says something about how well Connersville controlled the tempo of the game. A good win for their program.
Top Performers:
Harold Bennett | Attucks | 2018 6’2 SG – 24 points, 3 steals
Garrett Silcott | Connersville | 2018 6’1 PG – 22 points, 9 rebounds
Jacob Brown | Connersville | 2020 6’6 C – 13 points, 5 rebounds
Jamal Harris | Attucks | 2018 6’2 SG – 8 points
Game 7: Tindley 60, Park Tudor 36
Park Tudor was without their best guard in this one after he suffered an injury the night before. This led to a very lopsided battle as Tindley has been playing really good basketball as of late. Park Tudor was led by a freshman in Isiah Moore’s absence and Ronnie Johnson scored 12 points for the team. Tindley looked good and even though it wasn’t a great game for Eric Hunter, they made it through easily.
Top Performers:
Eric Hunter | Tindley | 2018 6’3 SG – 31 points, 5 rebounds
Sincere McMahon | Tindley | 2020 6’ PG – 14 points, 3 assists
Ronnie Johnson | Park Tudor | 2021 6’ PG – 12 points, 2 steals
KJ Coleman | Tindley | 2018 5’11 PG – 12 points
Game 8: Richmond 56, Portage 52 OT
Richmond was in full control in the first half but Portage came out and took it to them in the third quarter scoring 16 points while holding Richmond scoreless. Richmond trailed by eight to start the fourth but went quickly on a 10-2 run to tie it. Portage hit a three at the buzzer to tie it to send it to overtime but then in overtime Richmond easily took it over and won via Christian Harvey free throws.
Top performers:
