Noise Makers In The 2019 Class, Who Is Impressing Thus Far?
The 2019 class of prospects in the Gem state is incredibly deep and full of talent. As we continue to make our way through the season more and more skilled players are hitting our radar. With a good amount of games under each team and players’ belts, Prep Hoops Idaho takes a look at some of the recent movers and shakers within the 2019 class.
Below are players who have been putting up solid numbers all season long as well as some who have gone big for their teams recently. With such a strong 2019 class shaping up, the Idaho prep scene for boys basketball appears to be in good hands, as these prospects as well as more will continue to shine and grow as they make their way through their junior campaigns.
Here are some of the top noise makers in the 2019 class thus far in the prep hoops season.
Ellis Magnuson, 6’0, Guard, Borah
Our top ranked 2019 player entering 2017-18, Magnuson has not disappointed as he is currently averaging 15.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and 1.9 steals in 7 games. Magnuson has his team rolling as well as Borah has a perfect 7-0 record with 3 wins already in their conference. Next up for Magnuson and the Lions will be arguably their stiffest test yet as they square off against Rocky Mountain Saturday, December 30th at home.
Cole Alton, 6’0 Guard, Boise
Fittingly enough, Alton began the year as our second overall ranked player in the 2019 class and similar to Magnuson, Alton is putting up numbers worthy of a top 5 ranking. For the Boise Braves, Alton is putting up impressive numbers including 14.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.3 steals in 8 games. His team has dropped just one contest through their first 8 games and it was a close one to Meridian 66-60 on the road. After the new year it will be a great showdown for Alton as he and his team will go up against Mountain View and their rock solid team January 2nd.
Jake Poulton, 5’10, Guard, Columbia
Prior to their loss to Capital recently, Poulton put on a show in their big win over Skyview going for 21 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals in the 71-70 win. On the season thus far, Poulton is averaging 19.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.4 assist, 1.4 steals in 9 games. The shifty guard continues to be a focal point for this Columbia squad who next hosts Meridian, Tuesday, January 2nd.
Deshun Harwell, 6’1, Guard, Century
Harwell has been a riser in our 2019 rankings and looks to continue that trend after recent outings such as 20 points, a game high in a win over Sky View (UT) in the Preston tournament. Harwell has also posted 14 points in a loss to Twin Falls 69-55, and then 15 points in a loss to Highland 73-59. For the Diamondbacks and Harwell it is a matchup against a very talented Burley team on Tuesday, January 2nd, as Harwell will be faced with some good guard play by Burley.
Cole Lake, 5’8, Guard, Eagle
The Eagle Mustangs have had a bit of an up and down season after opening up the year with two straight wins. Since then, the team has just one win in four games, but that hasn’t been without the steady play of Cole Lake, the guard is averaging 11.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.0 blocks in 4 games, and if he can stay at it for this team, he will be one to watch for sure as a riser in our rankings. Lake and the Mustangs play host to Rocky Mountain, Tuesday, January 2nd in what will be a tough matchup to start 2018.
Javen Woodall, 5’9, Guard, Meridian
Woodall and the Warriors have played in a number of close games this season, but no game has been bigger than their last game where they knocked off Boise High 66-60. Woodall has been a huge part of this team’s success and is averaging 13.7 points, 1.3 rebounds, 1.2 blocks, 2.1 assists in 9 games. In what will be an enticing matchup at the guard position, Woodall will face Columbia’s Jake Poulton next as they will hit the road for a January 2nd showdown at Columbia.
Troy Patterson, 6’5, Forward, Kuna
Another stellar player in our 2019 class and at the 5A level, Patterson has been a huge asset for the Kuna Kavemen. At 5-3, the Kavemen’s losses have all been to quality opponents and Patterson has since averaged 16.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.3 blocks over those 8 games. Another prime time game will take place January 2nd for Patterson and Kuna as they will tip off against Centennial at their place.
Kolby Modrow, 6’5, Forward, Centennial
What a head to head tilt it will be as the aforementioned Patterson will be working against Modrow, another excellent 2019 forward who is finding his way this year. Averaging 13.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.0 steals in 6 games, Modrow has been a nice piece to the Centennial Patriots puzzle this year.
Bryant Corbridge, 6’0, Guard, Malad
The six foot guard for the Malad Dragons has been popping up on our radar more and more often and his 18 points and 3 rebounds in a win 55-39 over West Jefferson is just an example of that. Keep an eye on this 2019 prospect for the remainder of the season as he will likely be on the move up our rankings.
Faust Ystueta, 5’9, Guard, Twin Falls
A game high 20 points in a big win over Century 69-55 might be exactly what Ystueta and the Twin Falls Bruins need to stay in the win column as they begin the 2018 calendar season. A matchup with Bonneville, January 3rd will be a test to see if head coach Matt Harr and this team can win back to back games for the first time this season.
