NHR Daily: Wishart hits triple double, Gals Tip-Off highlight the weekend
The high school season is off to a great start after the boys games at the gals tip-off classic thrilled fans plus Calvin Wishart put together a monster triple double.
Girls Tip Off Classic. What do you get when you combine a dozen girls games and four boys contests with some of the best boys talent in the state? An incredible atmosphere and a fantastic opener. DeLaSalle opened things up with the best team in Iowa, Iowa City West. Best against the best style match-up. Gabe Kalscheur gave the Islanders 31 points but as a team DeLaSalle couldn’t deal with ICW up front and lost the game 65-62. Game two had Armstrong put up a fight versus Orono but the 18/17 from Jarvis Thomas for the Falcons resulting in a 14 point win. The night cap was the best game as Minnehaha Academy outlasted East Ridge 60-58 led by 17 from JavVonni Bickham. The Raptors got 29 from Courtney Brown Jr. The most eye opening contest was Cretin-Derham Hall defeating Hopkins 86-73 with Daniel Oturu missing much of the game because of injury. Sy Chatman put up 33 on the Royals frontline while Jaeden King used his touch for 22 and Ryan Larson had 22. DJ Davis came off the Royals bench and led with 16.
Wishart’s Big Day. The Delano Tigers earned a quality 68-52 victory over Waseca over the weekend and it was the Calvin Wishart show in every way. Last year he put up the 27/8/8 each game on average but the 32 points, 15 rebounds, and 11 assists in the opener took things to an entire new level. Delano also got 15 from Keegan O’Neil while Waseca was paced by the 19 from Malik Willingham.
Wright Hits the Big One. With the score tied at 66 with 0.7 seconds left on the clock Columbia Heights had the ball on the baseline looking for a shot. Junior Jarvis Wright cut to the ball, caught quickly from two steps inside halfcourt, and touched in a deep three at the buzzer to earn a 69-66 victory. Wright left the game with 14 points while Deundra Roberson had 17 to lead his team. Gabe Alada led BSM with a game high 18 points.
Notes! Down 45-43 to Sartell with under seven minutes to go Matt Todd scored a dozen points down the stretch to push his team to a 2-0 start. Monticello didn’t quite meet their expectations a year ago so Todd came out explosive and scored 33….Rieshaun Satar knocked down 34 points in a high scoring win over Eagan….Jeremy Beckler of White Bear Lake, Marcell Winston of Coon Rapids, and Drew Adams of Roseville are senior names that also had big number starts to their season.
Tonight. Very little action this evening with the only metro game being Minneapolis Patrick Henry versus Prairie Seeds Academy. Park Christian vs Bagley will be interesting to see how much Steele Senske puts up. Fairmont v Tri City United will give us a clue as to how good Fairmont can be and I think they will be quite solid.
