All Met Candidate: Xavier Johnson
In this series, we will take an up close look at 10 First Team All-Met candidates in the DMV. With all things being considered, our prediction covers three categories: individual production, team performance, and level of competition. We will release one candidate each day, with the players organized in alphabetical order by last name. Here, we profile Bishop O’Connell 2018 guard Xavier Johnson.
PRODUCTION
After his brilliant 31 point, 5 rebound, 3 assist performance in a win over Georgetown Prep, it was clear Johnson wanted to make a statement to open the season. The super quick 6-foot-3 lead guard is as intelligent as he is explosive, and that’s what makes him so productive.
PERFORMANCE
It’s clear that Johnson and Bishop O’Connell would have to prove themselves with so many changes heading into this season, but they are certainly off to a good start. Another difficult test comes on Wednesday when they travel to face Paul VI in a rivalry contest.
COMPETITION
Aside from the rigors of the WCAC, Head Coach Joe Wootten always makes sure his team is tested in each regular season contest. This year the Knights will travel to San Diego where they will play in the Torrey Pines Tournament, and they’ll head up to Massachussetts for Hoop Hall. If Johnson can propel his team into the top three of the league by the end of the year, it could be very hard to keep him off the All Met First Team.
