Marquee Matchups: Week 4 in Southern Ohio
Early season jitters are no longer an excuse, as conference play has begun around the state. Just before holiday tournaments start next week, we’re going to take a look at the top week four games in each state region.
We’re focusing more on Southeast Ohio this week, as many of the Dayton and Cincinnati teams have a light schedule as we approach Christmas.
Dec. 22: Unioto at Chillicothe
Chillicothe will be on fire on Friday night for the crosstown matchup between two of the best teams in Southeast Ohio. Chillicothe is rolling in the early season, led by Cedarville signee Branden Maughmer. The 6’2” point guard does it all for the Cavs, often nearing double-digits in rebounds and assists. Maughmer is aided by teammates Simon Roderick, Will Roderick and Jayvon Maughmer.
Chillicothe has a point guard of their own in 6’2” Flagler signee Logan Swackhammer. Swackhammer is a gifted passer who can set up his senior classmates Brandon Kennedy (Concord signee) and Peyton Hill.
Dec. 23: John Glenn at Sheridan
The 2016 Division II State Champions are undefeated coming into the week, including a 20-point trouncing of then-undefeated Marysville on Friday night. They’ll take on a tough Muskingum Valley opponent on Saturday, who is 3-1 after a buzzer-beating loss against Philo this past week.
Senior 6’1” guard Justin Heacock has been leading John Glenn this season, and he may not be totally in his rhythm yet after a football postseason run. Heacock is a high-motor kid who can finish in crafty ways. Their proven coaching staff also receives contributions from Sam Kumler, Josh Raley, Jack Williams, and Casey Smith. On the other end, Sheridan is led by a junior duo of Ethan Heller and Grant Heileman. Heller’s deep ball threat has carried Sheridan this season, but they’ll need Heileman to dominate JG with his 6’7” size for them to pull off the upset.
