Marquee Matchups: Week 4 Recap
Eastmoor Academy and Toledo St. John’s swept challenging week four schedules, Alonzo Gaffney messed around and got a triple-double, and stop sleeping on Solon. That and much more in this week’s Marquee Matchup Recap!
Dec. 19: Lima Senior (44) at Toledo St. John’s (68)
The Titans impressed in the first of two Marquee Matchups this week. The senior trio of Vincent Williams, Houston King, and Ryan Christie, led the St. John’s win over a conference opponent.
Dec. 19: Brush (77) at Lakewood St. Edward (93)
Brush, now 6-1, lost their first game of the season to a talented St. Ed group, who were led by a 20-ball from sophomore Devontae Blanton. Brush sophomore center John Hugley scored eight points in his season debut, per Cleveland.com. The Eagles are 6-0.
Dec. 19: Columbus South (65) at Eastmoor Academy (67)
In a rematch of last season’s District Final, Eastmoor protected home court behind 22 points from Randy Overlson and 18 from Taevion Kinsey, per 270 Hoops. The Warriors are the only team who is undefeated in conference play within the City League South.
Dec. 20: Shaker Heights (82) at Garfield Heights (85)
An Alonzo Gaffney triple-double and fourth quarter comeback were enough to power Garfield Heights past Shaker. These teams could meet at full-strength in the postseason, as Garfield Heights was without Brison Waller and Christian Guess missed most of the fourth quarter for Shaker, per Cleveland.com.
Dec. 22: Chillicothe Unioto (48) at Chillicothe (45)
Unioto seniors Logan Swackhammer, Brandon Kennedy, and Peyton Hill combined for 42 points and the Shermans are now 5-1. Cedarville signee Branden Maughmer put up 22 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in the loss, per the Chillicothe Gazette.
Dec. 22: Reynoldsburg (58) at Pickerington Central (72)
Adrian Nelson and Josiah Fulcher came up huge in the rivalry game, combining for 39 points for the Tigers, per 270 Hoops. The reigning Regional Champions are 4-1 without Jeremiah Francis to start the season.
Dec. 22: Cleveland Heights (83) at Maple Heights (72)
Cleveland Heights grabs another quality win over the previously unbeaten Maple Heights Mustangs. Four-star football prospect Tyreke Smith recorded a game-high 25 points for Cleveland Heights, per Cleveland.com.
Dec. 22: Whitmer (35) at Toledo St. John’s (53)
We’re leaving week four without any doubt that St. John’s is the best team in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference. Houston King scored 20 points to lead the Titans, per the Toledo Blade.
Dec. 22: Mentor (66) at Solon (80)
Solon is proving to be one of the top teams in Northeast Ohio with back-to-back wins against St. Ignatius and Mentor, by a combined 32 points. Their trio of Sincere Carry, Michael Bekelja, and Trent Williams stayed hot by scoring a collective 61 points, per Cleveland.com.
Dec. 22: Beechcroft (83) at Northland (74)
Youngstown State signee Jelani Simmons scored 29 points to push Beechcroft past Northland, per 270 Hoops. Beechcroft is undefeated and appears to be one of the strongest Division II teams in Ohio.
Dec. 22: Africentric (50) at Eastmoor Academy (57)
The reigning Division II Regional Champion Eastmoor Academy Warriors beat Columbus South, Africentric, and Dayton Dunbar this week. Taevion Kinsey and Tripp Hopkins led EA in scoring with 16 a piece, per 270 Hoops.
Dec. 22: John Glenn (65) at Sheridan (39)
A strong defensive performance from John Glenn kept them undefeated in a conference game against Sheridan. Casey Smith, Josh Raley, and Justin Heacock all scored in double-figures for John Glenn, per the Zanesville Times Recorder.
Dec. 23: Archbold (65) at Ottawa-Glandorf (70)
Despite still awaiting the return of Jay Kaufman, O-G picked up a huge win over Archbold. This game could be a preview of a Division III Regional Final game.
