Iowa’s Player of the Week Poll (2)
Luke Vaske
6′ PG, Norwalk, 2018
Over the past three seasons, Vaske has proven that he can be one of the state’s best scorers, but this season, though he’s still scoring a bunch, it’s his assist numbers that have spiked. In three Norwalk wins last week, he averaged 8.3 assists to go along with 21.7 points per game. Most impressive, though, is he shot 76 percent from the floor, was 6-8 from deep, and connected on 15 of 17 free-throws.
Isaac McSorely
5’10 G, New London (2019)
New London is without its star guard Mason Porter right now (hand injury), but is still rolling right along, off to a 4-0 start this season. Junior guard Isaac McSorely has been doing a nice job of picking up the slack. Last Tuesday against WACO he netted 17 points and ripped away five steals. The following game, in a win against West Burlington, he scored 20, and swiped seven steals. McSorely is a menace on defense.
PJ Rundquist
5’10 G, Wapsie Valley, 2019
It’s been an amazing start to the season for this junior guard, and last week he settled in nicely while averaging 38 points per game in two Warriors wins. Both games were magnificent for skilled prospect; in a Tuesday triumph over Denver, Rundquist poured in 43 points and canned nine 3s. The following game, a win over Columbus Catholic, he scored 33, grabbed six boards and swiped six steals.
Ryan Meyers
6’5 G/F, G-H-V (2018)
This big and versatile guard was essential to helping lead the Cardinals to the state tourney last season, and he’s off to a torrid start to his senior season. In three games last week, Meyers poured in 24.7 points per game on an efficient 62 percent shooting, and pulled down 12.7 boards per game for good measure.
Ryan Smith
6′ G, Eagle Grove (2018)
Eagle Grove is off to an amazing start to their season, ripping of five straight wins after a tough opening night loss to Forest City. Smith has been essential to the team’s success, and averaged 19.7 points on 63 percent shooting, 5.6 rebounds and three assists per win last week.
Drake Johnson
6′ G, Stanton (2019)
We saw Johnson for the first time last summer while playing up with some 17U guys on the grassroots circuit, and he was impressive. So, it’s no surprise that he’s off to a red-hot start to his junior season. In two Vikings wins last week, Johnson went off for 20 points per game on 64 percent shooting, and snared 10 rebounds per game from the guard spot. He dished out six assists per win to boot.
