Iowa’s 3 Up, 3 Down (Week 3)
There are certainly plenty of ebbs and flows throughout the high school season, we’ll try our best to track those here. Teams that land in the DOWN portion of an article, could later find itself in the UP part, and vice-versa. Such is the grind of a full high school season. Below, you’ll find this week’s ebb and flow.
UP
Des Moines North: The Polar Bears continue to weave their winning web after notching two more Ws last week. After starting the season with a narrow loss to Waukee, the win streak is now five for North. Two weeks ago they beat Hoover by 15, last week they erased a late double-digit deficit to get by Johnston, so the quality wins are there. Tyreke Locure, Debo Kallo and Co. are for real.
Iowa City West: The way it’s looking, the Trojans could probably land on this list every week, ‘cus they might not lose. After a 3-0 start, including a win over Minnesota power DeLaSalle, the Trojans won two more last week; a 27-point win over crosstown rival Iowa City High and a 26-point triumph over Illinois’ Bolingbrook. Top-ranked 2019 Patrick McCaffery is averaging 19.4 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Senior Seybian Sims is having a monster season to the tune of 17 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.
Wapello: Trenton Massner has established himself as one of the state’s most productive all-around talents, and his 21.5 points per game have the Indians flying high. It’s now 6-0 for Wapello, who won three games last week, including a nine point W over previously unbeaten Iowa Mennonite. Massner and Co. are looking like a legitimate 2A threat to make a run to Wells Fargo Arena come March.
DOWN
Grinnell: Jake Hull and Co. have one of the toughest schedules in all of 3A, but the 0-6 start is something that the Tigers aren’t used to. They’ll try and right the ship and nab their first W tonight against DC-G. Things should get easier just after the break with games against North Polk and Pella Christian.
Mason City: After starting the season with a bang — a 33 point win over Des Moines East — the Mohawks have dropped six straight. Most recently Marshalltown was able to nab its second win of the season against Mason City. They’ll try and get back into the win column tonight against 3A Clear Lake.
Whiting: It’s been a tough go so far this season for the Warriors, they’ve dropped their first six games, and have lost by an average of 43 points. The offense will need to pick it up if Whiting’s gonna win one, it’s averaging just 21.points per game this season.
