First Half State Leaders: Rebounding
With the holiday break upon us, it’s time to look back at who the state’s leading rebounders have been throughout the first half of the season.
1.) Brady Gavin (Martensdale-St. Mary’s, 2018) – 17.1 rebounds per game
Gavin is one of two players to find himself on both the scoring and rebounding top ten lists, and is posting an absurd 26.7 and 17.1 stat line, which exceeds our preseason expectations of 25-15. The 6-7 big man has been dominant for the Blue Devils.
2.) Joe Wieskamp (Muscatine, 2018) – 15.4 rebounds per game
The other player to find himself on both the scoring and rebounding lists, Wieskamp has been far and away the best player in the state this season. Look no further than his 44-point, 25-rebound outing against Davenport North to further drive home that point.
3.) Kevin Rewoldt (South Hardin, 2018) – 15.0 rebounds per game
Rewoldt has been dominant on the glass for the Tigers, pulling down nearly three times as many rebounds as the next highest player on the roster. And he’s been dominant on the glass on both ends of the floor, pulling down 50 offensive rebounds and 70 defensive.
4.) Keegan Simons (Ar-We-Va, 2019) – 14.1 rebounds per game
After averaging 3.4 rebounds a game as a role player last year, Simons has really blossomed into a standout for the Rockets, averaging a double-double of 15.9 points and 14.1 rebounds.
5.) Elijah Hazekamp (Sioux City Bishop Heelan, 2018) – 14.0 rebounds per game
The best player for a team that we currently have ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, Hazekamp is averaging a monster 22.7-14.0 double-double for the Crusaders. At his current pace, he’d surpass 1,000 career rebounds in the final game of the regular season.
6.) Treavor Kokjohn (Fort Madison, 2018) – 14.0 rebounds per game
The undersized power forward has been phenomenal on the glass this season, posting double figures in rebounding in every game so far for the Bloodhounds. He also has a double-double in all but one game (a game in which he scored only eight points).
7.) Derek Krogmann (West Delaware, 2019) – 13.4 rebounds per game
The long, lanky leader of the Hawks uses his nearly seven-foot wingspan to his advantage, leading the state in total rebounds this season in addition to his 22.4 points a game. The Iowa Barnstormers product is relentless on the glass and is hearing from a slew of low-major Division I programs.
8.) Evan Doyle (Central Lee, Donnellson, 2018) – 13.4 rebounds per game
The Hawks have only played six games (only five of which are entered into QuikStats), but Doyle has been dominant, with 15.8 points and 13.4 rebounds a game.
9.) Noah Carter (Dubuque Senior, 2019) – 13.0 rebounds per game
Carter’s season was off to a phenomenal start before an injury to his leg (compartment syndrome, which required surgery) sidelined him. He was averaging 21.5 points and 13.0 rebounds on 64% shooting before the injury, which will sideline him indefinitely. He has a chance to become a low-to-mid-major prospect with a big summer with the Iowa Barnstormers.
10.) Will Woodruff (St. Edmond, Fort Dodge, 2018) – 12.8 rebounds per game
The 6-5 wide body isn’t much of a scoring threat (only averaging 8.6 points a game), but he’s been great on the backboards for the Gaels, pulling down nearly double the amount of rebounds that Sean Flaherty, his closest teammate, has.
The next seven: Blake Alden (Diagonal, 2018; 12.7), Jarod Nichols (Colfax-Mingo, 2018; 12.3), Nik Coble (WACO, Wayland, 2020; 12.0), Cameron Krebsbach (Manson Northwest Webster, 2018; 11.6), Ben Heeren (Ogden, 2019; 11.3), Troy Houghton (Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln, 2018; 11.3), Brett Livesay (Collins-Maxwell, 2020; 11.3)
