12-22-17 & 12-23-17. Dunbar High School. 101 N Street, NW, Washington, DC. 20001
The Dunbar Holiday Showcase was a very successful showcase at famed Dunbar HS in Washington, DC this past weekend. The beautiful & well lit basketball gymnasium featured a superb cushioned hardwood floor system. Dunbar was established in 1870 & is thriving in 2017. On the wall behind the scorers table is a fantastic large mural painting of the 1976 Dunbar basketball Team that recorded a perfect 27-0 record & a #1 ranking in the nation in 1975-76. Legendary Dunbar Head Basketball Coach Joe Dean Davidson led the Crimson Tide team which included: Craig “Big Sky” Shelton and John “Ba Ba” Duren of Georgetown, Kenny Matthews of North Carolina State, Joe Thweat of St. Francis of Pennsylvania & Louis Whiting of Youngstown State. John Duren & Craig Shelton both played in the NBA & the team is one of the best ever in HS basketball. DC legend Stacy Robinson was a standout for Dunbar & NBA bound until drugs took control of his life. However, he is doing well today & still plays pick up games.
I would like to thank Dunbar Head Basketball Coach Damon Singletary, Atheistic Director Dr. Henry Frazier & Principal Abdullah Zaki for their great hospitality. Many of the the games went to down the wire with several going into OT. This great 2 day event showcased excellent HS players, sportsmanship & coaching. Prep Hoops will be following almost every team that played in the Dunbar Holiday Showcase this season. Many hidden gem players were discovered this past weekend & Prep Hoops will write individual articles for these special players.
