A Closer Look: Donovan Gregory
One player that has put together a strong strong start to the season is 2019 guard Donovan Gregory of Carmel Christian in Charlotte.
The 6-foot-5 Gregory has had some strong scoring outputs early in the season and has attracted the attention of national scouts after his play at The Holiday Hoopsgiving Tournament in Atlanta.
Playing under former Charlotte 49er standout Byron Dinkins at Carmel Christian, Gregory is averaging close to 25 points per game and has Carmel Christian off to a 11-0 start. Carmel Christian has wins over some of the top teams in the state and are in prime position to take over the top spot in the PrepHoopsNC Top 12 Private School poll with Greensboro Day losing yesterday to Cannon School.
A huge match-up with Gaston Day looms on Friday and will be a good test for Carmel Christian as Gaston Day features Houston signee Nate Hinton, College of Charleston signee Quan McCluney and scoring guard MJ Armstrong.
Gregory has the same tools as the aforementioned Hinton but to some scouts has the ability to make shots a little more consistently than Hinton. Gregory is primed for a jump in his recruitment similar to the one that Hinton had this summer and spring. He has the athleticism to play above the rim when attacking the basket and can score off the dribble.
A junkyard dog type of player, Gregory excels in scoring the basketball and doing the little things that college coaches’ love. He can get after it on defense and has the length and size to be a problem at the college level.
He currently holds offers from Appalachian State, Winthrop, Charlotte and Hampton. That list is sure to grow with the national exposure he is garnering from scouts and college coaches.
