The Tip Off Classic has nearly all the top teams in the state of Minnesota and the majority of the best prospects in the country. Five star talents Tre Jones of Apple Valley, Jalen Suggs of Minnehaha Academy, and Matthew Hurt will all be playing as will be top 100 level national recruit Daniel Oturu of CDH (if his ankle is healthy). Top 200 nationally ranked Gabe Kalscheur of DeLaSalle, Jarvis Omersa of Orono, Tyrell Terry of DeLaSalle, Zeke Nnaji of Hopkins, and Dain Dainja of Park Center.
East Gym. There will be eight games played starting at 9:30am with Spring Grove vs Springfield kicking things off and Armstrong playing New Prague at the 8:30 final game. Both Gach leads Austin against Totino-Grace at 11, Calvin Wishart is featured at 12:45 leading Delano against Fergus Falls, and a very interesting 2:15 game of North St. Paul facing Eden Prairie as Damien Johnson coaches against the program he was at an assistant at last year. The Polars have Goodnews Kpegeol while EP has a load of sophomores including Drake Dobbs plus Kyler Kluge as a senior.
There are a couple massive Class AA games being played later in the day on the East Court with Michael Schaefer leading St. Cloud Cathedral against SDSU signed Owen King of Caledonia and Adam Trapp of Esko facing Annandale who has been to state the last four seasons. Champlin Park is also on the court led by Josiah Strong against Minnetonka.
West Gym. Tipping off at 9am on the main floor is St. Thomas Academy against Osseo. A Class AA match-up of Perham/Breck, a Class AAAA battle of St. Cloud Tech/Lakeville North has a pair of ten potential teams playing, and the big school Ws from the east metro (Woodbury) take on the same from the west Metro (Wayzata). Perham has Logan Richter and Tech has Brevyn Spann-Ford who both will be on their official visits to Minnesota for football this weekend (both are committed to the Gophers).
At 3pm the massive games begin with Matthew Hurt and JM facing sectional opponent Lakeville South led by Shae Mitchell. Hurt and Mitchell should be fun as both played with the D1 Minnesota 17u team this past spring/summer. At 4;30 some of the best young players as well as some D1 signed seniors go at it when Park Center and Minnehaha Academy tangle. Jarius Cook of PC is headed to NDSU while Minnehaha’s JaVonni Bickham will play at Denver. Also in this game are half of the top six 2020 prospects in the state with Jalen Suggs, Dain Dainja, and Terry Lockett.
DeLaSalle faces Hopkins and both of these teams will be motivated to avoid a second Breakdown loss at the start of the season. The Islanders lost to Iowa City West last weekend while Hopkins dropped a game to CDH. Joe Hedstrom of Hopkins is committed to Wisconsin and the Islanders will need to find somebody to guard him as well as Zeke Nnaji and Dane Zimmer as the Islanders struggled up front this past weekend. Then you have great match-ups like Blaise Beauchamp and Tyrell Terry at point, Gabe Kalscheur vs Anthony Davis at guard, Kerwin Walton vs Jamison Battle as quality long young wings, and don’t forget guys like DJ Davis and CJ Dickson.
The final game is Apple Valley and Minneapolis North, a pair of defending state champs going head to head. Tre Jones of Duke leads the senior Apple Valley crew of Martens, Macho, Hendrickson and others against North’s seniors of Tayler Johnson, Odell Wilson, the Hines twins, and Zion Stanford. Apple Valley won the match-up a year ago, this weekend we have the rematch.
