Bob Wettig: 2019 Evaluations
The Bob Wettig Tournament provided a great look at a lot of new faces along with some of the state’s best. The first day of the event was really solid and gave us some solid game and prospect matchups. Here is our breakdown of those 2019 prospects.
Maurion Martin – 6’1 SG 2019 – Portage (IN)
Martin is a big, strong guard with the ability to play on the ball. He’s really strong and when he looks to drive into the lane defenders kind of bounce off of him. He’s got good enough handlers and size that he could be a really nice point guard. Showed a jumper as well but he’s more of a driving guard right now. Isn’t big with his ability to go left to right but has a hesitation and sidestep dribble that work really well for him.
Myles Johnson – 6’5 SF 2019 – Indianapolis Homeschool (IN)
Johnson is a long, lean wing with a raw but effective skill set. Not outstanding handles but good enough to make plays. He’s not going out searching for points but plays. Was great passing the ball and had the vision to find the dumpoffs and kickouts to his shooters. Good IQ and pretty athletic with some length. He’s a bit of a project but the base for him is solid and could develop quickly with a little bit of work.
Drew Comer – 6’4 SG 2019 – Richmond (IN)
Comer is a solid off guard with a quick trigger from deep. He’s got great size and is now starting to really do some work off the bounce. He did have a little trouble against the length and speed of Tindley but overall it has really improved. Will need to keep improving and if he can that could be something that drives his stock come next summer.
Alan Cox – 6’7 PF 2019 – Franklin Central (IN)
Cox is a lean forward with some stretch ability to him. He was decently mobile in this game but was more than willing to take a jumper from three if left open. He’s got the size and skill in the post to be a solid scorer on the low block but he needs a little more toughness and strength to do it consistently. If he can get there in the next year, he could see interest come in a lot. The makings of a solid small school forward.
Harold Bennett – 5’11 PG 2019 – Crispus Attucks (IN)
Bennett is a tough, strong lead guard with tons of speed and some offense still growing. He was really solid at times defensively where he was able to get into defenders. If he can be engaged the entire game, his ceiling is pretty high. Has the speed to overwhelm on the defensive end. Today he was pretty solid facilitating and getting things setup. All his points came at the rim and in transition as he finished with 9 points.
Armaan Franklin – 6’5 SG 2019 – Cathedral (IN)
Armaan is a long, athletic guard with an improved game. He was really great off the bounce using his handles to get all the way to the rim and he showed improvement finishing with his length. That combo of athleticism and length makes him near impossible to stop when he is at the rim. He was definitely handling the ball more now and looked comfortable with it. He only made one triple but didn’t look to shoot a ton. If can add that in for real, that is his next step in his development.
James Franklin – 6’1 PG 2019 – Cathedral (IN)
Franklin looks like he is getting back to his normal self, moving well and his jumper was solid in this one. He hit a few threes and the touch was on point. Was a little aggressive at times and had the handles to finish the play off. He was playing well and aggressive but in the late third quarter he went after a loose ball and went head first into the bleachers. Had to be taken to the hospital. Before he was injured, he was playing as well as you could have hoped for.
Kendall Moore – 5’10 PG 2019 – Belmont (OH)
Moore is a smaller guard with a good frame and strength already. He’s got some solid handles and was pretty good getting at the rim. Really liked his breakdown ability at the top of the key. Needs to be a little more on the ball to make plays, not good off the ball right now. While small, his strength and length make him play a little taller. Solid non-DI prospect with a year to grow.
Ajani Smith – 6’4 SF 2019 – Indianapolis Lighthouse South (IN)
Smith is an undersized forward but has the size and athleticism you need. He’s pretty tough and is really well built, giving you a guy that can really rebound the ball well on the inside. Does a lot of his work faced up, making cuts to the rim along the baseline. He was a little more aggressive in the fourth quarter. If he can add a mid-range jumper or a jumper in general, that could spark a huge development in his game. One piece missing right now.
Zach Kuhn – 6’4 SG 2019 – Shelbyville (IN)
Kuhn wasn’t as big of a scoring option early in the game but picked it up later on. He was really good early using his size and vision to dish out some passes. When the Lighthouse defense started leaving some gaps, Kuhn went to start attacking off the wing and finishing well. He’s a lean, tall guard with the handles to create and make plays. Having seen his scoring ability, this was a little nice change of view for him. Had a couple nice mid-range pull-ups late in the game.
Josh Williams – 5’11 PG 2019 – Shelbyville (IN)
Williams is a smaller guard with a light frame but some handles and a capable jumper. He was pretty good driving and trying to dish it out, shooters missed a bunch of shots early in the game. Williams will need to add some strength but you like the raw breakdown ability and passing in the lane. Another year of development could make him a very capable on-ball guard.
