Big Week, Big Games
There will be a few good games for a few Cobb County sqauds this week in December. Take a look below for the full list.
Allatoona @ South Cobb – Tues. Dec. 5th 7:30pm Region 6 class 6A
This match up will be a rematch of last year’s region championship game. Both squads made the final four last year in Georigia’s class 6A but both coming up short to a state final appearance. The Buccaneers of Allatoona took the region title between the two last season with their junior leader PG Trey Doomes. This will be a different year for both squads after losing some star power from their last seasons roster. The Eagles lost their star point guard in Trevin Wade, who transferred to Montverde, but Coach Moultrie and the Eagles are still a tough bunch to beat. South Cobb will be coming off an overtime lost to their neighborhood rival Pebblebrook on Friday night Dec. 1st. Allatoona will also be coming off a lost, losing to Etowah on the same night. This year the Eagles have a star in the making in 2019 CG Markieth Browning. Browning is averaging 14.2 point per game so far for the Eagles, who are an overall 3-2 coming into this one. Allatoona on the other hand is still trying get back to their elite level status, coming in at 2-3, Coach Hood and his squad are still figure things out as they go along. This will definitely be a low scoring affair as both squads are defensive minded teams.
South Gwinnett @ Kennesaw Mountain – Tues. Dec. 5th 7:30pm
This will be a end to a home and home series between these two schools. South Gwinnett won last year’s matchup with a score of 68-52. The Comets will be coming into this one at a record of 5-2 and coming off a win against Hebron Christian Academy. This should be a great test for Kennesaw Mountain, who comes into this 5-0. The Mustangs arguably have the best scoring duo in Cobb so far with 2018 CG Josh Strong and 2019 WG Jalyn McCreary. Strong is averaging 22.0 points per game and McCreary with 19.5 so far. The Mustangs are still without one of their top scoring options in 2019 PG Khalil Shaheed. Khalil will be ineligible until January, so kid’s like 2018 PG Jordan Barnes has stepped up big time. Mustangs are my pick to give McEachern some type of fight in their region.
Westlake @ Wheeler – Fri. Dec. 8th 7:30pm Region 2 class 7A
Out of all the games in this big week, this matchup should be the best one yet. These two programs are a couple of Georgia’s best high school programs. Westlake recently won a state championship back in 2016 and the year before that the Wildcats of Wheeler won the state title in 2015. This game is also a region game. Both squads split the season series last year with the home team coming off with the win. If you have not heard yet, 2018 C EJ Montgomery is having a monster season so far for Wheeler. Wildcats are coming off a region win last Friday night against Campbell, giving them their first lost of the season. 2019 SG Isaac Martin is also having him a good season and is one of the best shooters not only in Cobb but the state of Georgia as well. For Westlake, this is a young squad this year and they are still finding their way. With departures of Chuma Okeke, Danny Lewis, and Jamie Lewis, the Lions are relying on their junior leader Chase Hunter. Chase is a 6’3 combo guard who now looks like a pure scorer for his squad. 2019 SG Koby Isaac is also a key contributor to this season’s Westlake squad. This game should be and can be a high scoring affair.
Porter Graud (SC) vs McEachern – Sat. Dec. 9th 3:00pm – Blue Collar Basketball Event
McEachern will be participating in the Blue Collar Event this weekend at Buford Arena at Buford High School. The Indians come in ranked #9 in the nation and coming off an easy blowout win over their region opponent North Paulding this past Saturday. They will be facing Porter Graud (SC) who comes in at 6-0. We do not know much on Porter Graud but they have wins over Jalen Lecque’s Christ School (NC) and Zion Williamson’s Spartanburg Day (SC). This should be a good test for McEachern as they will have a tough December schedule as they head to Florida for the loaded City of Palms Classic and come back and participate in the Tournament of Champions at Wheeler High School.
Wheeler vs Bishop McNamara (MD) – Sat. Dec. 9th 5:45pm – National Hoopfest
Wheeler will be headed to Washington DC, DeMatha High School in Maryland to participate in the National Hoopfest event. Win or lose, the Wildcats will have to bounce right back from the matchup against Westlake the night before. Wheeler will face Bishop McNamara of Maryland. Collin Sexton and his Pebblebrook squad participated in this event last year and faced Paul IV (VA).
South Cobb @ Campbell – Dec. 9th 7:30pm
Another neighborhood rivalry is in store for the South Cobb Eagles. These two squads split the series last year with the home team coming out with the win. This will be one of the hypest games all year for Cobb County like always. The Campbell Spartans will be facing Hillgrove Tuesday night before this matchup and could be coming into this one 6-1. South Cobb will be facing Allatoona and then hosting Creekview Friday before they head down to Campbell Saturday night. This will be a good one due to the fact Campbell has a good balance scoring team this year. This will not be easy for Coach Gwynn and the Spartans knowing that South Cobb is known for their pressure man to man press defense.
