5 Takeaways: Democracy Prep vs Cimarron Memorial, Legacy Tip off Classic Championship
Over the weekend, I’ve come to learn you cannot measure the heart of a man or a team. I had an opportunity to see a very exciting game, between two teams that are totally opposite. Cimarron-memorial has a school population of over 3,000 students and it’s in the 4A division. On the other hand Democracy Prep is a small institution that’s in the 2 A division, and has a senior class of only 51 students. One thing about basketball you can’t measure it off statistics alone. The game has to be played on the floor!
5 things to take away from the game:
Team play was key in this game for Democracy Prep. Ball rotation was the difference, playing with patients help propel Democracy Prep to a victory. Regardless of division this team can play in any division and be a problem. This program plays for one another, it’s something special to see! They are relentless on defense. That is rare in this era!
Point Guard Play:
Point guard play is key at any level of play. Coach Trevor Diggs of Democracy Prep have one of the best backcourts in the state of Nevada regardless of class or division. On this day in an exciting game that came down to the last bucket. It was 2019 6’0″ point guard Najeeb Muhammad that seal the deal. He finished with 22 points and 6 assists 2 rebounds. 2018 5’9″ shooting guard Akeemis Williams knock down 3 big time buckets in a game that went back and forth. That 1-2 punch is lethal!
Role Players:
Role players are key to the success of any program. Democracy Prep has one 5’11” 2019 CG Daniel Plumer. This young man does all the Dirty Work. At his size he’s a relentless rebounder. That’s hard to believe, he positions himself well and he just makes plays. On this day he came to play!
Last season this young man missed the entire season. Due to a foot injury in the Tarkanian Classic. A big-time tournament that is held in Las Vegas. He is a name that you will here from in the future.
Coaching:
One thing that is lost in all of this player profiling is coaching. On this day coach Trevor Diggs make great adjustments. When Cimarron made their runs and went up by 7. Coach Diggs quickly called a timeout, and settle his team down. They quickly got back to calling their offense sets and made the adjustments that were necessary down the stretch.
Democracy Prep, program building:
I have said this on many occasions there is a difference between a basketball team, and a basketball program. This program looks for long-term success. In the last six years, all they have done is just win four state titles. They have also sent multiple players to play at the next level. This is a program that is one of the top in the city of Las Vegas.
