5 Questions: Week 2
Week 2 is officially in the books. With plenty of season still to play, here are our five questions that should receive further clarification and answers as the season progresses.
5 Questions: Week 2
1. Can West Jordan compete for the region title?
At this point, West Jordan looks like a contender for their region title. However, they will most likely need to get through Copper Hills in order to claim the crown. Darrien Nebeker and Sinai Enoch have played at an extremely high level and look like one of the most potent 1-2 punches in the entire state. There is plenty of time left for West Jordan to continue to demonstrate that they are the real deal. With that said, I fully expect them to compete for the region title.
2. Is Lone Peak the top team in 6A?
Lone Peak sits at 4-0 after two weeks of play and has looked like the best team in 6A after week 2. However, time will tell. There is plenty of season left and a lot of unanticipated things can happen. Further, they have to survive the toughest region in 6A. However, they will get the opportunity to do that with one of, if not the, top point guards in 6A. Steven Ashworth is off to a strong start and averaging nearly 19 points and 7 assists per game. Ashworth makes this team go and will be the key to them making noise come the state tournament.
3. How good is Corner Canyon?
Corner Canyon looks legit early in the season and already has a couple of strong wins on their resume. In addition, they will get the opportunity to play in another tournament this next week after winning their tournament. They will open up with a game against Davis, which should be a good opportunity for them to continue to assert that they are a top team in 5A. Gabe Tooms and Ammon Jensen have played the best early.
4. After Week 2, is Orem the top team in 4A?
After beating Juan Diego, who proceeded to take their frustration out by beating up on rival Judge Memorial, Orem lost by 14 to Timpanogos. Timpanogos is one of the top teams in 5A and that should not hurt their resume. However, they will get a chance to show how talented they are at the Vivent Great Western Shootout this next week. Further, when they return, they will get to square up with American Fork in what should be an interesting showdown. At this point, Orem is still the top team in 4A with Logan and Juan Diego right on their heels.
5. Is South Sevier the top team in 3A?
Needless to say, Judge did not look overwhelmingly impressive in their blowout lose to Juan Diego. Although Juan Diego is one of the best teams in 4A, that lose did not make Judge look like a leader in 3A. As the search for the top team in 3A continues, South Sevier has inserted their name into the competition with blowout wins and a win against 4A Hurricane. Although the majority of their wins have come against 2A opponents, South Sevier has looked impressive early. South Sevier will play a much tougher schedule this week and will need to continue to play tough in order to survive it undefeated. Continue to watch Caleb Barton and Brodee Tebbs.
