5 Best: Kenwood vs Gray Collegiate (SC)
5 Best: Gray Collegiate (SC) 79 vs. Kenwood 64
Chicago Il, — The first boys high school game of Saturday’s Chicago Elite Classic. paired Gray Collegiate out of South Carolina versus Kenwood Broncos. Both teams came into the game undefeated Gray (3-0) and Kenwood 1-0 with a win over Farragut earlier in the week. This would be a true test for the Kenwood Broncos facing a tough program from the South. Gray had a major post presence with 6’9 2018 Center Michael Marsh and Top 50 nationally player for 2019 Forward Juwan Gary. RJ McGee and Nas Turner provided a nice one- two punch on offense for Kenwood, but ultimately the post play from Gray was too much to handle as Gray handed Kenwood their first lost on the season in a 79-64 final. Here we look at some of the best performances of the game
MVP: SF Juwan Gary 6’6’’ (2019) Gray Collegiate (SC)
The Small Forward out of South Carolina got the crowd buzzing early with a couple monster slams for Gray Collegiate and the Top-50 recruit propelled his team to victory. Gary is an athletic wing who is capable of playing both Forward positions, he is best around that basket and slashing but also showed he can step out and hit from deep. Gary finished the game shooting 10-14 for 23 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in the victory. Gary holds D-1 offers from Georgia, NC State, East Carolina, Clemson and Maryland among others.
Offensive: RJ McGee 6’5’’ (2018) Kenwood
The senior guard had a monster game keeping the Broncos in it. Just when you thought Gray would go on a run McGee would be there for tough bucket to stop it. McGee can score from all levels and has good size at 6’5’’. McGee finished the game 9-11 from the field including 5-6 from three! He also had 4 rebounds and 3 assists. I was impressed with the different ways McGee can score and how efficient he was from the field. He’ll be looked on to be a go to scorer for Kenwood all year.
Defensive: Michael Marsh 6’9’’ (2018) Gray Collegiate
The big bodied senior had a good game in the paint forcing Kenwood to take tough shots and settle for jump shots. Not a player that plays above the rim, but he knows how to use his feet. He finished with a game high 8 rebounds including 4 offensive rebounds and also chipped in 12 points.
All Around Game: Nas Turner 6’5’’ (2018) Kenwood
I liked what I saw out of Nas Turner who continues to improve his all-around game. He has improved on the perimeter and ball handling and is an athletic wing that can score at the rim, which showed on a big time dunk over a Gray defender. He finished the game with 12 points 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Turner holds offers from Kent State & Lewis University and is also hearing from Drake University and Tulsa.
Best Passer: Khalil Robinson 6’1’’ (2019) Gray Collegiate
Robinson got things in motion for Gray dishing out 6 assists in the game. Showed good court vision and got his team in their sets to start the offense and work the post. Have to love a gritty point guard show can run the show. Robinson did just that for Gray and should have a good year doing so with all the weapons around him.
