5 Takeaways : Dillon vs Mullins
Prep Hoops SC took a drive up 501 to watch a game in the Pee Dee Area of the Palmetto State. Dillon playing in its season opener is fresh off a 3-A State Football Championship (5th Title in last 6 years – oh yeah they finished runner up that other year). The Mullins Auctioneers have a young and upcoming squad under Head Coach Steve Smith.
The Dillon Wildcats jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game and that was really the only high light of the night for the Wildcats. The Auctioneers tied up the game at 17-17 at the end of the 1st quarter. Mullins went on a 12-0 run to make it 29-17 at the 2:29 mark of the 2nd quarter.
The young Auctioneers cruised the rest of the night and led 57-38 starting the final quarter. CJ Gilchrist continued his hot foul shooting in the last quarter going 9-10 from the line and finished the night with 27 points. Mullins prevailed 75-57 to improve to 2-0 on the season.
MVP : CJ Gilchrist (2020) – Mullins HS (pictured on front)
Gilchrist stands just 5’8 and plays off the ball for the Auctioneers. Gilchrist scored 27 points on the night. Gilchrist had the green light when he wanted it to you this evening.
Offensive Performance : Jordan Brantley (2019) – Mullins HS
Brantley a bouncy and athletic guard was all over the glass on both ends of the floor. Brantley 5’10 finished plays in transition. Brantley scored all of his points at the rim. Brantley finished the night with 17 points.
Defensive Performance : Xavier Legette (2019) – Mullins HS
Legette a left-handed wing player plays inside the paint and defends ALL over the floor. Legette plays the ball and swarms it like crazy. Legette 6’3 is extremely active on the glass and in transition. Legette must work on his perimeter skills but, really excels in the transition game. Legette is a very unselfish player along with being a great passer.
Best Freshman – Zy’Aire Charles (2021) – Dillon HS
Charles playing in his first varsity game scored 11 points for the Wildcats. Charles did connect on 3 straight times down the floor from behind the arch. Charles must tighten up his handle but that will come with more playing time and maturity on the varsity level.
Rest of the Season :
Dillon was missing Darius Boatwright who currently seems to be in the dog house according to the Wildcats Coaching Staff. Boatwright was no where to be found and not in attendance. Tyquan Porter was not in attendance, he was attending the Mr Football Banquet at the Beach. Porter recorded 11 interceptions this season for the State Champs.
Mullins has a solid starting 5 but really lacks much support off the bench. Sammy Pressley was a virtual a no show tonight after having a solid freshman season. The Auctioneers will keep improving all season long but do play in a tough region with Carvers Bay, Kingstree and county rival Marion.
