LAS FLORES, CA—The final day at the 19th Annual Orange County North/South Challenge provided a chunk of basketball clips that will help shape our views of certain prospects heading into league play and the playoffs—led by beast from London, Tim Adetukasi. Special thanks to Head Coach Steve Garrett and his staff for their hospitality and friendly climate.
MVP
Dawson Baker (Capistrano Valley)
2018, 6-foot-4, 185 pounds
Joel’s Take: Baker does it all for Capo Valley. His relentless pace was on display at Tesoro High School as he made play after play at both ends of the floor. He can play both guard positions with equal aplomb as he possesses the scoring mentality and facilitating skills to warrant that claim. Will battle Mater Dei catalyst Spencer Freedman for Orange County POY honors.
Best of the rest
Tim Adetukasi (Saddleback Valley Christian)
2019, PF, 6-foot-6, 215 pounds
Joel’s Take: This Great Britain transplant brings a lot to the table. His post skills and balance need to improve while operating in the post, but he is a beast. He snatches rebounds in and out of his area, can finish above the rim with momentum, and he even has a soft touch out to the 3-point stripe.
Wilson Cal (Sunny Hills)
2020, PG, 6-foot, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: The sleeper of the night would definitely go to this young prospect. Cal is a left-handed point guard who plays with a great pace, always has his head up, and he can change speeds to keep defenders from crowding. He shows touch to the stripe, can play off the pick and roll, and he has a nice runner as well.
Triston Broughton (Tesoro)
2019, WF, 6-foot-4, 185 pounds
Joel’s Take: Broughton has solid looking frame with a nice combination of strength and length. He has the ball skills to lead the break, can knock down the 3-point shot, or slash his way to the rim. He gives you an honest effort at both ends of the floor as well. Keep an eye out for 6-foot-5 sophomore Kaden Garrett—the lanky lefty has range on his shot and possesses an IQ for the game.
Trent Harper (Northwood)
2020, PF, 6-foot-4, 185 pounds
Joel’s Take: This young prospect goes about his business and doesn’t force the issue. He has long arms, soft hands, and can affect the game with his IQ, savvy, and timing. The left-hander, who appears to have some growth spurts left in him, allows the game to come to him and it will be interesting to see his development in the coming seasons.
Dominick Harris (Pacifica Christian)
2020, SG, 6-foot-3, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: This kid has not seen a shot he doesn’t like—a true gunslinger as we say in the scouting world. He can hit shots from anywhere and his range is out to 25-feet as well. He can slash is way to the rim and use his rangy frame and long arms for the finish as well. However, finding teammates off his dribble penetration and getting on balance (drifts on his shot) on his shot will help elevate his game.
Erik Papke (Cypress)
2018, WF/PF, 6-foot-4, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Papke has a wing-type frame, but he does is his damage from the elbow to the rim. He is a clever finisher in the paint, has excellent length, and his instincts at both ends are very good. He anticipates well in the passing lanes, can finish with either hand, and his motor runs hot. Teammate Michael Hyan showed range and lift on his jump shot as well.
