The Bulldogs of Jay M. Robinson High School took on the Hickory High School Red Tornadoes on Thursday night,
Cody YoungHickory High School is coached by Team CP3 coach Andy Poplin and Robinson High School is coached by Lavar Batts Sr, who is the father of NC State freshman Lavar Batts Jr. The win for Hickory bettered the Red Tornadoes record to 4-0.
MVP: 2020 Guard Cody Young (Hickory): Scored 27 points while making 9 three-point baskets. Young is one of the best shooters in the state for his class and is not afraid to let it fly whenever he gets a look at the rim.
Best Big Man: 2018 Jackson Bell (Hickory): Scored 18 points on the night. He is a solid post prospect that can score in the paint. He is a good defender that forces offense to change their shot selection.
Best Guard: 2018 Vi’chon Means (Robinson): Has been a standout for Robinson High School for the past two seasons and showed an ability to score the basketball last night. Scored 16 points for Robinson on the night.
Best College Prospect: 2018 Torey James (Hickory): James scored 16 points on the night and showed the ability to score from all over the floor. His size helps a lot with scoring over smaller guards and he can muscle his way into the paint to either score at the rim or make the right assist. He has offers from Lincoln Memorial and Kennesaw State
Best Rebounder: Jaquan Thurman (Hickory): Thurman did a great job on the glass. Grabbing 11 rebounds and scoring 10 points.
Interesting Fact: Cody Young’s father, Al Young was a standout at Hickory High School back in the late 1970’s. He played against Gastonia’s James Worthy in the NCHSAA playoffs.
Robinson HS Coach Batts-Batts Sr won a state title in 2016 with Lavar Batts Jr.
Hickory HS Head Coach Poplin-Pop won a pair of state titles at Concord High School back in the early 2000’s.
