West Jefferson vs. Karr: Scouting Reports (Video)
Karr and West Jefferson will tip off their seasons tonight (Tues., Nov. 14) against St. Paul’s and Friday against Higgins and both teams got a good warm up against one another in last week’s Karr Jamboree.
The Cougars looked like they had a win locked up when De’Antray Hughes sent home yet another dunk that made it 29-21 with just a few minutes left but the Bucs made a big run to win 34-33. West Jeff 2019 G Tony White came through in the clutch sinking two free throws with 3 seconds left to win the game.
Here’s a look at the top performers from the matchup:
Tony White — West Jefferson 2019 6’2” G
White was always in the right spots at the right time to help the Bucs get the win. He found space amongst the trees in the paint to get a handful of timely put-backs and was aggressive with the game on the line going straight to the rim. White was fearless when he got to the stripe swishing both free throws and his toughness and attitude was a key factor in West Jeff’s comeback.
Dajour Lloyd — West Jefferson 2019 5’11” PG
Lloyd was the driving force for West Jeff throughout most of the game with his ball handling, passing and timely scoring. He was also strong on the other end of the floor as an on-ball defender and had a key steal and layup late in the contest that tied the score at 32. Lloyd took a few chances offensively that led to some impressive passes and his impact would have been felt even more had a few tough layups rolled in.
Jonathan Powell — West Jefferson 2018 5’10” PG
Powell came up with some really key plays on both ends of the fourth for West Jeff. He had a few steals on defense and a big 3-pointer that ignited their 13-4 run to end the game.
De’Antray Hughes — Karr 2019 6’5” F
Hughes made the loudest statement of any player in the 3-game jamboree, which also included Landry-Walker and Helen Cox. The 6-foot-5 junior may still be a bit undersized to play in the post at the next level but his athleticism is undeniable.
He finished with at least six or seven dunks in the matchup including an and-one through contact, and had nearly as many blocks with a couple of fierce rejections. Hughes’ performance served as confirmation to his previous outing at the Prep Hoop Top 250 Expo when he was one of the event’s top players.
Marc Bowie — Karr 2019 6’3” G
The University of Arkansas-Fort Smith signee was the most consistent, efficient and polished player in the matchup for either squad. He was automatic from midrange off the dribble and operated well out of the pick and roll to get to his spots. Bowie also got a chance to show off his athleticism with a dunk in transition after a steal by Hughes.
Reynaud Shields — Karr 2020 5’8” PG
Shields is a young player who’s likely to play a big role for Karr as a sophomore. He drilled a couple of 3-pointers against West Jeff and was the primary ball handler for most of the game with Bowie. The young guard has a quiet confidence about him and made one of two free throws to give Karr a 33-32 lead with 6.6 seconds to play.
