Standouts: Riverdale at Dunbar
On Tuesday night, Riverdale opened its season at Dunbar and boy did the Raiders look good.
Riverdale, who earned a boost with the transfers of senior guard Jacob Tracey and sophomore forward Jadrian Tracey, handled the Tigers 75-52 in a convincing win.
Jadrian Tracey led all scorers with 22 points while Jacob Tracey had 15. For Dunbar, freshman guard Ahmad Watkins added a team-best 20 points.
Here are the top standouts from the Tuesday night clash:
Jadrian Tracey (Riverdale)
There weren’t many bad moments in this game for the sophomore guard. Tracey, previously a member of 2016 state semifinalist Southwest Florida Christian, posted 22 points in his Riverdale debut. The lengthy forward scored 14 of his points in the second half. He went to the rack with ease and hit outside jumpers when fed open looks. Nothing was better than his slam in transition in the first quarter on a pass from his brother Jacob Tracey (VIDEO).
Ahmad Watkins (Dunbar)
Just a freshman, Watkins kept the Tigers alive at the break down 38-28. He had 14 second-quarter points which included four 3-pointers. Watkins slowed down a little in the second half as Riverdale took over the game, but overall it was a nice varsity debut for him. Look for Watkins to mature a ton this season for Dunbar.
Jacob Tracey (Riverdale)
The older Tracey brother, Jacob put up 15 points. His best contributions came in the transition game as he pushed the ball up and down the floor with ease. The senior’s passing is stellar and his ability to get to the rim with his strength is noticeable. The Tracey brothers are good wherever they play.
Damion Simmons (Dunbar)
The junior guard helped out a ton on both ends of the floor for Dunbar. Simmons generated 13 points with eight coming in the second half. He’ll have to continue to score in bunches for the Tigers to stay in games. I think he should be able to. He’s a determined player who finds his way into good spots on the floor.
Joseph Ojeda (Riverdale)
Outside of the Tracey brothers, Ojeda was the next best thing for the Raiders. The senior guard had 12 points, nine coming in the opening half. He’s a gifted outside shooter and ball handler. He hit two 3’s and all of his jumpers were from a long distance. Ojeda will be leaned on as a core leader this season.
Caleb Snowden/Ty Williams (Dunbar)
Between them, Snowden and Williams had 11 points. Snowden, a freshman had some bright moments in the fourth quarter with back-to-back buckets to finish with six points. Williams, a senior had five points and performed well at times. Williams is going to have to lead his young offense more often than not.
