Sectional Preview: 12
The coming high school season is almost upon us. With that, we are taking a look at each Sectional in the state. Starting with 64 and ending with 1. Today, we are previewing Sectional 12.
Avon (11-12) – Lost 1st Rd. Sectional
Avon is coming off of a year in which they won 11 games and were fairy competitive thanks to a deep and talented senior class. Now, they lose Hayden Crowder, Gavin Collier, and Evan Lowden. They also will miss 6’3 sophomore guard Nathan Vernon as he transfers out of state. They do, however, bring back key players with size in Zyan Davis, Travis Sturm, and Zach Rinehart. Junior guard LeAngelo Saravia looks to have made some strides as well. They have a solid freshman coming in, Jayden Brewer, that should help on the wing. They lost a lot of offense but have a new head coach and likely a whole new look with a turnover of the roster. Could be a decent year for the Orioles.
Brownsburg (18-7) – Lost Regional Semifinals
This past year for Brownsburg was a really good one. They struggled early but came around and really took off. They were able to win 18 games and now return a big chunk of their roster. They lose the heart of the team in Landon Hall but they have also developed well as a team and bring in one of the best freshman in the Midwest in Pierce Thomas. This team has a ton of depth and should score the ball better this year. If they can play with the toughness their head coach wants, this group could be one of the best in the state and likely frontrunner for Sectional Champ.
Mooresville (5-17) – Lost Sectional Semifinals
Mooresville has had a couple of rough years but they are starting to get some solid younger talent. They lose a bit this season but they bring back Jon Eineman and Brayton Strohmeyer, their top two scorers. They also will get two solid incoming freshman with Luke Fowler and Miles McGowen, both players have size and should contribute early. Mooresville should improve from their 5-win record last season, maybe not to the extent where they can win this Sectional this upcoming season but maybe soon.
Plainfield (14-10) – Lost Sectional Semifinals
Plainfield really found their groove last year and was able to rack up 14 wins, they most they have had in a long time. They bring back two standouts in Trey Davis and Gavin Bizeau, but they lost a lot of key pieces around them. The loss of Conner Brens will really hurt but if Brock Bizeau can become a guy that can enter the starting lineup, this team could have another solid season. A step below the top two teams in this Sectional but not a bad team if things come together quickly.
Terre Haute North (16-9) – Lost 1st Rd. Sectional
Terre Haute North is always a solid group and never really has any dominant players. This season should be more of the same as they bring back a good amount of size and some skill. They lose their best scoring threats in Jalen Owens and Braelyne Compton. If they can get a little bit of that back, their size should be improved enough to be more impactful and they could play a little more through their forwards. Either way, they are good for 12+ wins and an outside shot of being a Sectional Champion.
Terre Haute South (19-8) – Lost Sectional Finals
The lost of Jaylen Minnett will really hurt but this team still have DeAvion Washington and he took some big steps this summer. They also bring Kody Deckard, Craig Porter, Kenyon Sholty, and Kapil Reddy. That gives them quite a bit of size and some depth at guard. This team probably won’t be able to play as fast as they did with Minnett on the ball but they should be better balanced and just a more sound team. Easy contender for the Sectional Championship.
