“Actually it will be Monday,” said Ryan Boyce’s father Rhea Boyce. “It is going to be held at East (High School), around 12 noon. I am not sure exactly where…in the gym or library.”

Of course Boyce will be supported by teammates and classmates at East High. Coaches and teachers are likely to attend. Expect a large family contingent on hand too.
“Just the family members,” said Mr. Boyce. “Of course my wife, myself. My wife’s parents. My sister and brother. Both of my daughters, one is in college (Memphis, and Collierville). It is probably going to be hard for (both daughters to attend) at noon.”
Ryan’s sisters are both in school. His oldest sister attends University of Memphis and the baby of the trio attend Collierville High School.
“My oldest daughter will be graduating from University of Memphis in December,” said Mr. Boyce.
Permeating pride, Ryan’s father gushed with glee sharing all the milestones his children are conquering in the coming weeks and months.
“Words can’t really express how we feel about our son.”
By signing to UAB Ryan Boyce will get a full scholarship for 2018-2019, which needs to be renewed each year. The only Tennessean currently competing for UAB basketball is Hunter Reynolds (Christian Academy of Knoxville). Boyce will make two Tennesseans for the Birmingham program.
“It is exciting,” said Mr. Boyce. “I tell you, it is very emotional, because we are excited for our son because he has had the opportunity to play the game that he loves.”
Parents love to see their children grow up. Sending their son off to Alabama will unveil a slightly different dynamic than what they felt upon Boyce’s sister Raven’s college enrollment at nearby University of Memphis.
Moving the young man in to his place will be flush with emotions. That moment and that day will mark a transition into adulthood.
“That day is about to arrive,” said Mr. Boyce alongside his wife Pamela Boyce during the phone interview. “It is bittersweet. No one wants to lose their child (Pause). My wife just said…he is going to college, he is not dying. She is talking right now, but she is going to be emotional that day.”
Ultimately, Ryan Boyce selected UAB over SMU, Memphis, and Florida. During the course of his three year recruitment, Boyce also earned offers from Ole Miss, UT Martin, Maryland, and Georgia.
Is there any trepidation about sending their son off to college out of state?
“Both my wife and I feel very strong and very secure about where he is going,” said Mr. Boyce. “UAB…my son was very excited about it. We got a very good feel from there. When something comes from the heart it reaches the heart. If we would have left him that day we knew he was going to be taken care of. For my wife to feel that way is huge, because she is very protective. We are very excited because he is so deserving of this. He has worked so many years, long hours and so hard.”
