Running the Show: Best PGs in the 757
The position of point guard maybe the toughest to play. Running the show is something these players have become used to. Here we look at the best point guards in the 757.
Antwan Miles | Phoebus | 2018
Antwan Miles is one of the best public school players the senior class in the 757 has to offer at any position. Miles can simply score the ball in any way needed. Listed on the top shooters in the 757 list, Miles is a shooter who can put the opponent in a hard place. The three ball is consistent for Miles when he plays, another added bonus. In addition to being able to shoot, Miles also has the ability to drive to the basket. His speed contributes to his ability to score, which is an upper hand that many do not possess. Athletically, Miles has can and will jump out the gym, and has had some big dunks throughout his high school career. With how good Miles is, it make shock many to know that he also has the ability to create shots for his teammates, and is a willing passer. Miles maybe at the top of a strong 2018 class the 757 has to offer, and Division I coaches should keep their eyes open for him.
Joe Bryant Jr | Lake Taylor | 2018
Joe Bryant Jr., the recent Norfolk State University signee is one of the best the 757 has to offer. The hard nose point guard is the heart of a solid Lake Taylor squad that should be poised to make a solid run this season. With his deep shooting ability, Bryant is scary from the top of the key, and with his passing ability and high basketball IQ, can also score without the ball in his hands. Bryant is a rather stocky point guard, who moves well for his size, and uses this size to his advantage when blowing past defenders. Joe has proved himself as a Division I athlete, and should lead a hungry Lake Taylor squad far into the playoffs.
Gabe Dickerson | Atlantic Shores | 2018
Gabe Dickerson, who recently signed his LOI to play at Division II, Francis Marion University is a combo guard, who may be the most aggressive guard the Hampton Roads area has to offer. And is probably the best on the defensive end. Dickerson’s speed is an advantage, that allows him to play with a high motor, and shut down opposing teams effortlessly. With an added jumper to his package, Dickerson is one of the best seniors the 757 has to offer.
James Hatton | Kings Fork | 2018
King’s Fork, now under the direction of Coach Rick Hite, should be poised to have a solid season with senior, James Hatton running the show. Hatton has the ability to drive to the basket, with control, and wiggle his way through defenses like none other. Hatton is the type of point guard every coach wishes for. With his high basketball IQ, Hatton knows exactly when to make the pass, or when to shoot, and is pretty consistent with his jump shot. Defensively, Hatton is a scrappy player, willing to risk his body to come up with an offensive possession for his squad. Hatton has a genuine love for the game, and would be a great edition to any mid-major program.
Ray Ward | Salem | 2018
Ray Ward doesn’t have a hard job with Jonathan Norfleet alongside him in the backcourt. But he does that job well. Ward could best be described as the definition of a true point guard. Creating shots for his teammates is a speciality for him, and Ward may possibly be the best passer the 757 has to offer. In edition to being able to create without the ball in his hands, Ward is pretty good with it as well. Not afraid to drive to the basket and draw the foul, or occasionally shoot the jumper, Ward should be expected to have a stellar senior season for the Sundevils.
Ashley “AJ” James | Green Run | 2019
Ashley James also had big shoes to fill. He is the younger brother of former Tallwood star, Isaiah Macer. His younger sister, is a star in the making at Princess Anne, and then there’s James. AJ is the type of point guard who can not only run the show, but can provide reliable scoring for a team. His range is notable, as has the ability to shoot from a high percentage from behind the arc. AJ James posses an uncommon skill-set for the game, and holds several Division I offers which should continue to come in.
Antwan “AJ” Epps Jr. | Bishop Sullivan | 2019
Antwan Epps is now running the show at Bishop Sullivan. And has already started out on a high note with a comeback win against Forsyth Day School, a game where he tallied 22 points, and dished out 6 dimes. A lefty, high IQ point guard, Epps is a quality edition to a Bishop Sullivan squad that features other talent as well to compliment Epps. In addition to being able to dish the ball to teammates, Epps has the ability to score at will, and is one of the 757’s best shooters in any class. On the defensive end, Epps can defend both guard positions, another addition that makes him one of the best. Just a junior, and already holding several Division I offers, Epps is a point guard all coaches should have their eyes out for.
Tim Montgomery | Princess Anne | 2019
Tim Montgomery, the younger brother of former Princess Anne star, Greg Montgomery had big shoes to fill coming into the Cavilers program. And so far, so good. Coming from a basketball oriented family, Tim has a high basketball IQ, and has been running the show at Princess Anne since his freshman year. Tim is the hard nose type of guard who is not afraid to drive to the basket for the tough bucket. Montgomery has seen solid improvement since his first year running the show, and should continue to see his stock rise this junior season.
Andre Bottoms | Oscar Smith | 2020
A lot of 2020 players have not emerged as stars yet, but Andre Bottoms is one who has. Even before his high school career even began, Bottoms was predicted to be one of the “next big stars” the 757 would have to offer, and he has lived up to this bold prediction. Although the youngest on this list, Bottoms is the best ball handler the 757 has to offer. He has excellent control, and makes smart decisions, especially to be a younger guard. Bottoms will be the control of a solid Oscar Smith squad, and will continue to get better. Look for him to be a high major point guard when it is all said and done.
