Recruiting Report: Zach Burns (2018)
Fernley 6-foot-2 point guard Zach Burns is certainly one of Northern Nevada’s best 2018 prospects, and is hopeful he can generate some additional college interest this winter because of it.
The talented floor-general already has one Division II offer in tow, from San Francisco’s Notre Dame de Namur, they offered during a visit this past summer.
Other schools in the region are very interested in Burns.
“I just got back from a visit at San Francisco State, it was an unofficial visit. So, I kind of touched base with the coaches there, and they’re going to see how this season plays out, but I’m definitely on their radar,” said Burns.
“Concordia University-Portland has reached out and showed a lot of interest, they want to see how my senior season plays out.”
“St Martin’s University talked with me on the phone and they really want me. They want me to come down on a visit, and to to see how much money I can get academically as well.”
A sharpshooter, who’s able to adeptly play both guard positions, Burns mentioned to PHNV specifically what his skill-set is, and how he excels on the hardwood.
“Of course, I can shoot the ball a little bit, and I really pride myself on my ball-handling, and I can D up when I need to,” said Burns. “I’m kind of like a playmaker, I like to set other guys up, that’s a big part of my game.”
Burns has started all three seasons for the Vaqueros, and averaged 18.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game last season as a junior.
Now, with his senior season on the horizon, Burns defined how his role might change, and what expectations he has for him and the team.
“We lost four of our starters from last year that were seniors, so I’m probably going to have an even bigger role than I did,” said Burns. “I’ll need to become more of a leader, this year I’ll need to step up not only on the court with my play, but my leadership as well.”
As for his recruitment: Burns is hoping team success translates to personal achievement.
“Going into the season, I’m more focused on the team. And hopefully with the team success will come personal success as well,” he said. “So, I’m hoping to have a good season, and hopefully some of those schools that I’ve been talking to will see something they like and offer me.”
