Recruiting Report: Spencer Mays (2018)
After spending the first three seasons of his high school career at University Lab, Spencer Mays has decided to follow in his brother’s footsteps and attend a prep school for his final year. Spencer is going to be playing at Pro-Vision out of Houston for his senior year, a decision he said was very difficult. “It’s definitely an adjustment, I don’t get to see my family very much, and I definitely miss my friends from school.”
But he feels like at the end of the day, this decision was better for his future both on and off the court. “I am trying to get as much exposure as possible, so that I can try to earn a scholarship and get a free education.” The Mays family is an incredibly gifted both on the basketball court, and in the classroom, and Spencer is no exception.
While the exposure that going to a prep school was certainly a factor, so was his ability to get in a ton of time to work on his game and get better. “At Pro-Vision, we workout two to three times a day most days. We have 6am strength and conditioning, afternoon practices, and individual skill work at nights. I have been working to get stronger, improve my footwork, and try to get better on defense.” When it comes to his strengths, he is a knockdown shooter from the outside, and plays with a very high basketball IQ.
When it comes to the next level, the biggest thing that Spencer is looking for is a high academic school. He also says that he is looking for a family enviroment, as well as a strong connection with the head coach. So far he has had contact from Houston, as well as LSUA. Spencer has a 4.0 GPA.
