All Tri-Valley Conference honored point guard Quinn Doorn of Viborg-Hurley is the leader of his team and the focus? Pushing his team to take another step.
The 2016-17 season was good with Doorn and Trace Sikkink leading the way. This summer the Cougars competed in Sioux Falls to help them become more complete as a team.
“Our junior year was really fun but we lost too many games that we should have won,” Doorn told PHD. “We did the Summer Jam league as a team up at the Pentagon and we also did the Fall Ball league at the Pentagon after that.
“The Fall Ball league gave us a chance to play with some of the best players around the area so it was a good learning opportunity. We didn’t always win but you could definitely tell we improved by the time it was over.”
Doorn knows exactly where he wants his team to be better and he feels he can play a big part in making them better with his own improvements.
“The main focus is to be more efficient,” Quinn said of his own improvements. “And making the right decisions with the ball, and especially trying not to force things if they’re not there.
“Turnovers and shooting percentage were always a factor in the games that we lost, so if we make the most out of every possession we should look pretty good.”
Why are the Cougars expected to be much improved? Because they bring back all of their key pieces.
“All of our starters are returning, and we have some talented freshman coming up as well. Our sophomore year we only won like four games or something like that and we lost some games last year that we shouldn’t have, so those are definitely some motivation to start getting some wins in the stat column.
“At the end of the day our goal is to get to state, but we know that’s everyone else’s goal as well and that were going to have to keep that in mind going into the season.”
Quinn knows every team has the same goals coming in but the advantage Viborg-Hurley has is experience returning.
“Individual goals would be to make our team better any way I can, whether that’s knocking down shots or making the extra pass,” Quinn said. “I think everyone’s goal is the same on our team, and that’s to get some W’s. We trust each other on and off the court and we know that were all in this together.”
As far as the next level Doorn has looked into his future but hasn’t thought much about college sports.
“I haven’t had a chance to talk to any colleges about sports. I’ve taken visits to SDSU and done some college fairs at USD.”
