Recruiting Report: Martel Ferrell (2018)
It’s been a while since Martel Ferrell (2018), a 6’6” combo forward, felt as comfortable in a situation as he does with Cornerstone Christian going into his senior season.
“I was at Cornerstone pretty much my whole life, I started here in sixth grade. Going into my sophomore year, I decided to leave and attend Euclid High School. That whole process, that was just a couple personal things were going on and the best decision for me at that moment was to transfer. The reason I came back was that there was no place like Cornerstone — the family environment, the whole basketball aspect of things,” Ferrell explained.
Ferrell was able to remain positive throughout his high school journey despite sitting out all of last season. Also, the time at Euclid allowed him to experiment as a perimeter player.
“When I transferred to Euclid … [coach Jonathan Harris] trusted me to play the two position. I got a lot of exposure from that. Ever since then, the 2 and 3 position has been my bread and butter,” Ferrell said.
For CCA this season, Ferrell is bringing size to the wing but he’ll likely be used inside also, if their showing at the Lima Super Scrimmage was any indication. Ferrell impressed us at the event a couple weekends ago with his mobility at 6’6”, effort on the glass, and ability to beat people off the dribble as a slasher. Ferrell also has the physical tools to defend multiple positions.
“I believe I can defend the 1 through 5 with my length. I use that to my advantage. I do believe that this year, my coaches will use me in presses, man to man situations, picking up full,” Ferrell said.
In hopes to improve his overall game, Ferrell is focused on adding strength.
“The main focus I’m trying to improve is getting stronger. You can’t go wrong with gaining weight because at the next level, that’s what they look for is being able to hold your position,” Ferrell said.
Ferrell is open-minded about the recruiting process right now. Many colleges may not have even seen him perform with so much time away from the court as he didn’t play grassroots ball this summer.
At the moment, however, Ferrell is being recruited by a couple of college programs.
“Hiram has shown a lot of love. Lawrence Technology University has been showing a lot of interest as well,” Ferrell said.
“I have visited Hiram. I have not visited Lawrence. I really don’t know where I want to go right now, just keeping my options open.”
Ferrell, a 3.0 GPA student who hasn’t received his ACT score yet, will likely jump on more college radars throughout his senior season at CCA.
