Recruiting Report: Jael Vaughn (2019)
Herriman’s got one of the state’ best 2019 guards with 6-foot-1 floor general Jael Vaughn, and he’s looking to have a breakout season for the Mustangs this winter.
After spending his offseason with the Salt Lake Rebels’ 16U & 17U squads, Vaughn not only prepared himself for his junior season, but started to see some recruitment trickle in as well.
“I’ve talked to a couple of JuCos, and then my AAU coach has said he’s talked to several colleges in different divisions,” said Vaughn.
“I think if I can get my jump-shot where it needs to be and more consistent, I feel like I could go D1. That’s the goal, but I’m taking any opportunity that comes my way; D1, D2, JuCo, anything. The goal is to get free school.”
A slasher with the bulk the finish through contact at the rim, we had Vaughn defined his skill-set to PHUT in his own words.
“Some strengths I think I have is, I’ve been spending a long time in the weight-room, and I’m one of the stronger guards around, and that helps me get to the cup. And it helps me get rebounds and everything like that,” said Vaughn.
“I feel like I can do the little things to help the team, like play defense and move without the ball, set screens and help defense.”
Vaughn added: “I’ve been really trying to work on my 3-ball, and be more consistent. It’s come a long way and it’s gotten a lot better. So I’m just continuing to work on that, as well as leadership.”
After coming off the bench last season as Herriman’s sixth-man, Vaughn — Utah’s 29th-ranked 2019 –will start at point guard this season.
“My coach told me he wants me to be more vocal and one of the leaders, especially from the point guard position,” said Vaughn.
“And as for team goals, I feel like we have the best set of bigs in the state. And I definitely want to try and win a state championship.”
