Prospect Watch: Raekwon Azor (2018)
Guard Raekwon Azor of Denver South has worked a long time for this senior year. Hours in the gym as well much time on the road has Raekwon excited for the winter.
All summer long Azor was preparing for his final year at South and he did that by playing 17u basketball as well as getting in the gym every opportunity he could.
“I pretty much lived at the gym this off season,” Raekwon said. “I went to the gym at least two times a day and worked out with my trainer Jasmin Williams of UH training 3 times a week.
“We worked on just making me a better point guard which includes decision making, ball handling, and shooting but my main focus all summer was improving my jump shot. He was also my AAU coach for Boykins Basketball Academy. We had a good year.
“I was the starting PG for them. We went to a championship in Vegas. We played top talent from all over the west coast.
In addition Azor competed with his high school team at camps and one day events to get comfortable with the expected rotation for the winter.
“For my high school Denver South, in June we were in the DU team camp where we went to the semi finals of the hardest bracket,” Azor said. “Junior year I felt like I should’ve played a lot more then I did on varsity but when the minutes were given I did pretty good.”
Azor is working on his jumpshot so come start of the season he can be a more dangerous outside weapon.
“My main focus since the end of last year has been my improving jump shot and making it lethal,” Azor said. “I know I can get by anyone I want but when they have to respect my jump shot it will bring me to a whole new level. My focus has also been being a leader and talking more. As a senior on the team I know I have to lead and set the tone.”
Denver South has high expectations Cortney Dean and several other players returning.
“We have a lot of seniors returning this year,” Azor explained. “We all play well together and know our strengths. Our theme is to be grimey on defense and just lock people up. We want to be very aggressive. Our ultimate goal is to of course win the state championship because we know we have what it takes to do it.
My individual goals are to be a leader, get a lot of steals, set my teammates up and give them good looks, and do whatever it takes to win. My team goal is to win the state championship and the DPS league.”
It should be an exciting winter following Raekwon and his team make a push for a big season.
