Prospect Spotlight: Thomas Lecy (2018)
Thomas Lecy is one of the several returning key pieces for Orono and one of the reasons why they are considered a title contender.
Lecy is one of six Orono rotation players returning this year and one of many Spartans to play and workout with Powerhouse Hoops in the off-season.
“I played with Powerhouse White this summer for AAU and that was a good experience to finish out my AAU career,” Lecy explained. “Other than that it’s just been a lot of shooting in the gym getting ready for the season.”
The Spartans were the second best Class AAA team in state a year ago and the only team that took DeLaSalle to the wire in the playoffs.
“My junior year was good, we were all a little disappointed after losing to DeLaSalle in the section final but that’s really just motivated us to come back better this year.,” Lecy said. “My biggest focus for this year is defense and putting the ball on the floor more and being more than just a spot up shooter.
“We’re returning a lot of our main pieces from last year which will be nice already having some of that chemistry and experience. We also are a really balanced team and feel like we don’t need to completely rely on any one person.”
The balance is definitely there. Colton Codute provides the toughness and leadership at PG, Jarvis Omersa is the explosive frontcourt player, Blake O’Connor is a tough forward, Max Bjorklund is the combo guard that can be the leading scorer or handle, and then Griffin Sage pairs with Lecy to be the wing shooters.
Lecy of course spoke of being more than that for the Spartans and he will need to as he and his teammates replace things that Jack Anderson did. Orono has the talent to win it all but there is one team they must get past.
“Our goal as a team is to win state,” Thomas said. “Orono was the last team to win it before Delasalle and now we want to take it back.”
Lecy likely has the stroke and high level basketball experience to play in college but at the moment he’s not thinking college hoops.
“I’ve gotten a few letters from some division three schools but I’m not planning on playing basketball in college.”
