Prospect Spotlight: Markell Hood (2020)
Checking in at No. 5 in the Kansas’ current 2020 prospect rankings, 6-foot-5 guard Markell Hood is certainly a prospect to keep a close eye on.
A big and versatile guard, he’s already a physical presence, even as a sophomore, and broke down his playing style with us during a recent phone interview.
“I’m really an all-around player, and I get buckets. I like to get to the rim and play in transition, and I like to drive and kick to my teammates,” said Hood. “And defensively, I like to jump passing lanes and get steals.”
This spring and summer, Hood had the opportunity to play both on the adidas Gauntlet and the Nike EYBL. He wound up spending most of the season with Oklahoma EYBL program, Team Griffin 15U.
“I started out this summer playing with adidas Team Carroll, and it wasn’t the right program for me. And then I went and played with Team Griffin, and it went really well. It was a really good program, I liked the coaching staff and the players,” said Hood.
“It was a really good experience playing with Team Griffin. It was a fast-paced game, and we just ran five out and it was a good experience.”
At a very good Shawnee Mission West program, Hood played JV last season as a freshman. Now, he’s geared up and ready to run with the varsity.
“This year we are looking pretty good, there’s some really good players on the team. We all gel together, and we played this summer and moved the ball really well,” said Hood.
“If we play like we did this summer, I think we can make a state run.”
