Prospect Spotlight: Jamel Melvin (2019)
Jamel Melvin, a class of 2019 post at DeMatha, appears poised to take on a bigger role as an upperclassmen. The junior, who stands close to 6-foot-10 now, had a nice outing in a recent scrimmage vs. Mount St. Joseph.
“I’m versatile. I can play with my back to the basket and on the wing,” said Melvin of his overall game. “I can drive to the basket and finish with either my left hand or right hand. I’m a good defender, and I like to block shots. I can guard the post and on the perimeter.”
Melvin, who played a competitive grassroots schedule playing up with 17U Team BBC on the Adidas Gauntlet this summer, believes the most improved aspect of his game is the ability to finish through contact. We saw evidence of this during the MSJ scrimmage, and believe he could get even better in this area as he continues to grow into his body.
“Sometimes people can’t tell how hard I️’m playing because of my facial expression,” Melvin stated. “I need to work on my three point shooting.”
In the classroom, Melvin says he has a 3.3 GPA. St. Joseph’s, Holy Cross, Charleston, Denver, and Lafayette are in regular contact with him at the moment. What can Melvin bring to a college program?
“I bring a great work ethic and a high basketball IQ.”
The Stags are lucky to bring a guy like Melvin off the bench. There are many teams would love to have a guy that can impact the game on both ends of the floor. Kudos to Melvin for persevering at DeMatha, where he looks posed for a breakout season.
