Prospect Spotlight: Gavyn Elkamil (2020)
Already identified as one of the Kansas’s best young guards, we recently caught up with Pittsburg’s Gavyn Elkmail and he talked switching positions, prep school ideas, among other things.
The 6-foot-3 guard currently checks in as the 7th-ranked prospect in PHKS’ 2020 rankings, and explained why he’s currently making a switch from shooting guard to point guard.
“I’m trying to transfer from a point guard instead of a shooting guard. I can shoot the ball very well, but I like to get my teammates involved, too. I like to stay even-keeled and keep my composure, I won’t get too up or too down,” said Elkmail.
“The transition is going pretty good. I think that when I have the ball in my hands I’m a better player, because then I can create more.”
The talented sophomore spent his spring and summer playing with MOKAN Elite 14U, his birthday is at the end of April, and he was eligible to play a grade down.
It’s all part for a recently designed plan in which he’s decided he’ll play a year of prep school after high school.
Elkmail learned some things while playing with the elite grassroots program this summer. More specifically things he needs to improve upon.
“We were pretty good, but I think we could have been a lot better. And I think I payed well, I need to get a lot faster and most explosive,” said Elkamil. “And I need to pick up my teammates when they get down.”
As he heads into his sophomore season with the Dragons, he hopes to expand upon his sixth-man role from a season ago.
“We’re going to be pretty good. I think we have a shot at winning state,” said Elkamil. “And I don’t really know what my role will be, but I think I’ll be one of the scorers, and one of the leaders.”
