Prospect Spotlight: De’Antray Hughes (2019)
Currently checking in as Louisiana’s 20th-ranked 2019, 6-foot 5 combo-forward De’Antre Hughes is earning a reputation as one of the state’s more athletic and versatile prospects.
Through two games this season with Karr, he’s averaging a triple-double with points, rebounds and blocks.
And he says it’s his athletic ability and shiftiness in the post that makes him hard to handle.
“My strength as a player is rebounding and getting to the rim. It’s hard to handle me in the post because I have a lot of athleticism. But I’m most comfortable facing-up, out on the wing,” said Hughes.
After his blistering start to the season, he’s been sitting out since the second game because of cartilage damage. He’ll be back in three weeks.
He’ll then look to continue and ravage offenses with his elite shot-blocking ability.
“I know how to time the shot well, and my athleticism allows me to get up high enough to block the layups,” said Hughes.
He was exhibiting that same shot-blocking awareness this past spring and summer while playing with one of the area’s best grassroots teams, Elfrid Payton Elite 16U.
“They’d have me in the wing at times, and other times down in the post. I can play both for them,” said Hughes, who says his recruitment got off the ground a bit during the summer.
“Southeastern and Xavier (LA) have been talking to me. I just recently talked to Xavier, and Southeastern talked to me a couple of months ago.”
He added: “I’m hoping for a D1 college to offer me, I really want to play big-time, at that D1 level.”
Hughes says he’ll play with Elfrid Payton Elite 17U next season, that will certainly help him to accomplish that goal.
