Prospect Spotlight: Cade Savell (2020)
An up-and-coming 2020 in Nevada, 6-foot-4 guard Cade Savell spent last season cutting his teeth while standing out with the freshman team, and is ready to make his mark with the varsity this season.
The good-sized Desert Oasis guard says scoring and handling the ball are strengths of his, and he’ll do what he can this season to help the senior-laden Diamondbacks.
“I would definitely say one of my primary strengths is just creating shots for myself, especially going under screens or coming of screens,” said Savell. “I’m a primary 3-point shooter for my team, and I’m a pretty decent ball-handler for being 6’4.”
Last season, as a the MVP of his freshman squad, Savell gained confidence. He was dominant at times, and leaving him down with his age group was a strategic move by his coaches.
“My coaches said they could have moved me up last season as a freshman, but they wanted to leave me with the freshman to get my confidence going. And I put in the work this summer, and that’s why I think I’ve definitely earned a spot on the varsity team,” said Savell, who got some good experience with the Diamondbacks in summer leagues.
“It’s a huge difference playing varsity. The first thing I noticed was the change of pace, you get tired a lot more often because teams try and run you up and down the floor. And then the defensive pressure is a lot more intense.”
Savell will play with Las Vegas Punishers 16U next spring and summer, and that will be a great opportunity to see his recruitment start up.
But in the meantime, he’ll have his sophomore season to continue and gain momentum as one of of 2020’s brightest young players.
“Coming in as sophomore, I know I’m not going to have the biggest role on the team, but I know I am going to have a specific role coming off the bench. So, I’m really going to try and contribute in my own way,” said Savell.
“That’s spot-up shooting, creating a spark off the bench, and bringing energy whenever I come on the game.”
