Pre-Season High Flyers – player notes
A high-flyer is someone who has a lot of ability and is likely to be very successful in his or her career.
While we love three pointers as much as anyone else, does there is really nothing on a basketball court quite like a dunk. One resounding slam has the ability to swing the momentum of an entire game, get the crowd fired up, and to immortalize both the dunkers (like Blake Griffin or Michael Jordan) and those being dunked on (like Alton Lister or Frederic Weis).
The best of these dunkers can certainly be some of the game’s best players; Jordan or Julius Erving are certainly too shining examples of that. However, as we have learned you do not always have to be a great basketball player to be a great dunker. Gerald Green—who has now finally started to find a groove in the league—has played for seven franchises, and birthday boy Harold Miner won two Slam Dunk Contests and was out of the league in four years.
Emmitt Matthews Jr – 6’7 – Washington Supreme – 2018
Emmitt is no stranger to the big stage. This man plays with a high motor and has some of the most elite athleticism in the Tacoma area. With offers from many Pac 12 schools and other schools around the country he is most definitely on everyone’s radar. For how tall he is he is very shifty and has a very good mid range pull up. With his last year approaching he is most definitely going to have some big games for the Wilson Rams.
Colby Kyle – 6’8 – North City – 2018
This young man has been making quite a name for himself this past season. He is a very athletic Forward who can shoot the long-range 3 and can also penetrate through the defense. Interest have started to pile up for Colby and he looks to continue his impressive season in July again some of the most elite talent on the circuit. If you ask any of his friends they will tell you the most exciting part of his game are his chase down blocks.
6’8 sophomore Jaden McDaniel’s is a special talent coming out of Federal Way. He is a lanky post player who can also play small forward. He has a nice touch for mid-range jumpers, with the ability to take bigs off the dribble to get easy buckets at the rim. He’s a solid rebounder and is pretty athletic, finishing plays with dunks that get the crowd excited.
Class of 2019’s Jamon Kemp is a special talent, that’s on the rise. Kemp is the son of former Sonic, Shawn Kemp. Standing 6’5, he seems to still be growing and his game is improving each day. He is a smooth guard, with a nice jump shot and release. He can really get it going when he’s hot, knocking down jumper after jumper. He loves the mid range pull up, whether its off the dribble or from a post up. He’s very versatile with a great defensive presence. His biggest asset is his athletic ability. He is elite when it comes to that. He has caught plenty of bodies this summer and with him growing the way he is. He is going to get bigger and stronger.
TREY LAWRENCE, a class of 2018 combo guard at Glacier Peak High School. The 6’5 rising senior does many things well on the court, and is a tremendous athlete. One thing I really like about Trey is that he involves himself within the flow of the game, and doesn’t command any play calls. He finds ways to produce no matter what. Trey’s versatility on both ends of the floor is very evident. He can defend almost any position. His athleticism is eye-popping. He had a couple of chase down blocks and his head is clearly above the rim. I am excited to see where he lands after his senior season.
