Phenom National Showcase Standouts (Part 4)
We were in attendance for the fourth annual Phenom National Showcase featuring some of the top private schools from across the country and Canada last weekend. There were numerous high major prospects and coaches in attendance, and seeing some of the top matchups will be some of the most fun we’ll see all year, and most high schools haven’t even started playing yet. Here’s part four of our standouts, featuring five of the top performers from the weekend.
- Marten Maide | 6’4” WG | Carmel Christian (NC) 2019
A shooter with a great frame and a little toughness is something I’m always a fan of, and the Estonia native showed his shooting ability along with great instincts on both ends over the weekend. He moved extremely well without the ball, had a quick release with endless range and he showed good vision and feel when he caught the basketball. He didn’t try to do too much, but his ability to stretch the defense, take what’s given to him and make the right play is the reason he’s being recruited by a host of division one schools across the south.
- Donovan Gregory | 6’4” G | Carmel Christian (NC) 2019
A long and athletic off guard, Gregory impressed with his ability to use his athleticism on both ends of the floor to make plays for his team. He has great hang time, as he’s able to get off the ground and float to contort his body and finish above and around the rim when in traffic. He’s a solid rim protector when he comes help side, and he rebounds really well on both ends for a wing. He moves well without the ball and always seems to be in the right place at the right time, and his high motor makes him a two way impact player that can provides energy and does the dirty work as well.
- Brandon Stone | 6’10” PF | Christ School (NC) 2019
A skilled big man that would fit in well at the next level in the right system, Stone has a mix of size, length and skill that makes him a mismatch problem. He can be a stretch four man that can step out and knock down shots, but he’s also a good rebounder that crashes the offensive glass and can finisher around the rim with both hands. His defensive prowess was also impressive, as he was a good shot blocker in help side. He needs to continue to fill out, but the Pennsylvania native already holds 15 offers and those will continue to increase if he produces at the the high level he did this past weekend.
- Chris Barnette | 6’0” PG | Ravenscroft (NC) 2018
He may not look like it, but this kid is flat out a stud. I’ve been watching Barnette since he was a freshman, and his ability to control the game and create for himself and others is something that you can’t teach. He plays with pace, changes speeds and can make shots off the bounce from all over the floor. He has a tremendous feel for the game and great vision so he gets others easy shots, and he’s a tough leader that will do whatever it takes to win. He has a number of division two offers and if there’s a need for a point guard from a low major they should definitely take a look at this one.
- Justice Ajogbor | 6’10” C | Christ School (NC) 2020
A raw big man with a high motor, Ajogbor has a chance to be a high major prospect with work because of his size and athleticism. He has a great frame, decent hands and feet and he just works on both ends of the floor. He runs the floor and tries to finish everything above the rim, and he has a soft touch when he’s within 10 feet of the basket. He’s great on the glass on both ends, can protect the rim and just outwork every other player on the court. He’s one to watch because with improvement he’ll be an extremely highly recruited player.
