Palmetto State : Impact Sports Invitational – Spartanburg, SC
Prep Hoops SC drove the 4 hours north to the Upstate to take in the action from the Impact Sports Invitational on the campus of Spartanburg Christian Academy yesterday. The field consists of 7 teams from the Upstate and the Irmo HS Yellow Jackets.
The opening game featured the defending 5-A State Champion Dorman HS Cavaliers vs Broome HS. The Cavaliers jumped to a 12-6 lead after the 1st quarter. The Cavaliers featured Gabe Bryant (Gardner Webb) and PJ Hall (2020) in the front the court. Bryant had to back to back dunks late in the 2nd quarter to put away the Centurions. The Cavaliers led 29-15 at the halftime break.
The Centurions played better in the 3rd quarter with the play of Khalil Stringer (2019). The Cavaliers pulled away and won their season opener 63-42. Kamron Smith led the way with 13 points, Bryant 12 and Hall 10 points.
Stringer led the Centurions with 21 points on 7-22 from the floor. The Cavaliers were without the services of 2020 #1 player Myles Tate, Jordan McFadden and John Gelotte. The trio are all still playing football for the Cavaliers in the Upper State Championship Game this coming Friday.
The second game of the event featured Greer HS vs Mauldin HS. The game didn’t featured much offense with Greer leading 21-15 at the halftime break.
The Mustangs took the lead at 3:20 mark of the 3rd quarter when AJ Jackson (2019) connected on a mid-range jumper to make it 25-23. Mustangs Head Coach Adam McClain would get hit with a technical foul at the 2:01 mark with Mustangs trailing 42-39. Greer would maintain the lead to 47-39 with 57.8 seconds left in the game and then Eric Washington (2019) and Jackson would connect on back to back baskets for a 5-0 Mustangs run.
Greer HS would hang on to win 49-44. Magic Moody (2019) led the way with 16 points, Ryan Pearson (2018) 14 points, Chris Davis (2018) 10 points. The Yellow Jackets played without senior Sam Gravley who is out with a ankle injury.
The Mustangs (0-1) were led in scoring by Jackson with 14 points. Junior center Branson Taylor 6’8 chipped in 6 points.
