Ohio State offers Garfield Heights fab frosh Meechie Johnson
Freshman point guard Demetrius Johnson Jr. AKA “Meechie” of Garfield Heights received a scholarship offer from The Ohio State University on Nov. 29, according to his father and uncle.
The 5’10” guard is considered one of the top players in the state in the Class of 2021. Johnson and his father, Demetrius, were attending the Ohio State game vs. Clemson when Demetrius Johnson tweeted about the offer.
What a very emotional day for me. I am so proud of the hard work you have been putting in on and off the floor. My goal is always for you to be better than me. I am so happy and proud to say my son has officially received an offer from Ohio State University. God keeps on blessing pic.twitter.com/FmgbYWOjac

Johnson’s stock appeared to shoot up this summer when he put up some monster games on the AAU circuit including one contest in which he hit a game-winning shot played and so impressive that Houston Rockets’ All-NBA guard James Harden, who was in attendance, came up to Johnson afterward to congratulate him on his play.
“They like his upside,” Sonny Johnson, Meechie’s high school coach and Uncle, said when asked what Ohio State liked about Meechie’s game.
Meechie had already received an offer from Louisville prior to Ohio State as well as some smaller Division I programs.
Garfield Heights, who is one of the preseason favorites to win at win state title in Division I, opens it’s season on Dec. 2 when they play Cleveland John F. Kennedy at Cleveland Heights at 4:15 p.m.
Injury update
Bad news for the Brush Arcs. Sophomore big man John Hugley, who is ranked as the No. 5 player in the class of 2020 in prephoops.com Ohio player rankings, will not play Brush’s season opener due to injury. The big man suffered a lower-leg injury during a scrimmage in late November against Cleveland Heights.
Sorry I missed it
During my recent post on the top games opening weekend I neglected to mention the Dec. 1 game which features Euclid taking on Villa-Angela St. Joe’s., at Viking Village on the campus of VA-SJ.
Euclid features one of the top sophomores in the state in Garvin Clarke, a nifty point guard who at least one local AAU power broker claims will make it to the NBA. VA-SJ is coming off a state championship and returns point guard Jerry Higgins, who averaged 19 a game.
The game also features the coaching matchup between the Kwasniak brothers, Babe at VA-SJ, and T.J., who is in his first year at Euclid.
