Landry-Walker vs. Helen Cox: Scouting Reports (Video)
Louisiana’s basketball season tips off for most of the state on November 13 and teams are easing into the season with jamborees and scrimmages throughout the week.
Landry-Walker and Helen Cox got their feet wet on the hardwood Tuesday in the Karr Jamboree and the Charging Bucs took a good first step towards defending their 2016-17 Class 5A title.
As expected for the first action of the season, both teams came out a bit slow in the first of two 10-minute halves. Landry-Walker 2018 F Bre’Shaun Delpit got a big dunk in the paint that made it 16-12 early in the second half and it was all Bucs from there. The defending 5A champs went on to win the matchup 35-25 and here’s a look at the top performers from the game.
Dywan Griffin — Landry-Walker 2019 6’2” PG
Griffin is the reigning Most Outstanding Player in Class 5A and his maturity on the high school level showed on Tuesday. He controlled the pace of the game on both ends of floor attacking in transition, getting to the rim and defending at a high level at the point of attack disrupting Helen Cox’s offense. Griffin is already a seasoned veteran as a junior and he’ll spearhead the Charing Bucs’ attack offensively and defensively all season long.
Bre’Shaun Delpit — Landry-Walker 2018 6’8” F
After missing most of the summer with a broken nose, Delpit was anxious to get going in Tuesday’s jamboree and it showed. The high-flying big man made his presence felt in the paint with an and-one early on and a huge dunk in the second half that gave Landry-Walker the momentum for good. Delpit is an impressive athlete who’s footwork is still raw in the post but his size, strength and athleticism will lead to plenty of dominant efforts this season for the Charging Bucs.
Semaj Matthews — Landry-Walker 2018 6’7 F
Matthews’ game has continued to evolve over the last few seasons and he’s set to be a force to be reckoned with his senior season. He’s Landry-Walker’s most versatile player with his ability to score in the paint or make plays on the perimeter as a driver or jump shooter.
Matthews, however, will be most valuable on the defensive end. He’s more than capable of protecting the rim with his length and jumping ability and he’s also comfortable guarding smaller players on the wing where he can use his size and agility to shut down opposing ball handlers.
Shadon Green — Landry-Walker 2019 5’10” PG
Green continues to be a steady hand alongside Griffin in the backcourt for the Charging Bucs. He’s a good ball handler, jump shooter, decision-maker and is an aggressive on-ball defender. Green is also a sneaky athlete who’s speed and quickness catches some defenders off guard and he was able to change speeds well on Tuesday to get where he wanted on the floor.
Terrence Joseph — Helen Cox 2018 6’3” W
Joseph is an intriguing prospect who flashed on several occasions Tuesday against Landry-Walker. It was difficult for any of the Cougars to find space against the Charging Bucs’ gritty defensive unit but Joseph found room on the outside knocking down a couple of sweet 3-pointers. He also has good athleticism on the wing as well but has to find a way to be more consistent on both ends of the floor.
