Five Takeaways: Frankfort vs. Central Catholic
The first big tournament of the 2017-18 season is now underway with the Franciscan Health Hoops Classic on Monday at Lafayette Jeff. The first game of the tournament saw Central Catholic handle Frankfort 68-52. LCC was led by Jonah Switzer with 31 points on 13/19 shooting to go along with 6 rebounds. Sophomore Carson Barrett was stellar as well finishing with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists. Senior guard Alex Siegfried scored 23 points in the loss.
Alex Siegfried’s Jumper Can Be Potent
One of the takeaways from the game was Siegfried’s unorthodox jump shot. It isn’t the prettiest jumper but it is one that is really consistent and capable. He put up 23 points and was really the only big threat on offense for Frankfort. He hit 6 jumpers, 3 coming from behind the arc. He’s shown to be even better as a guy playing off the catch but in this game he was having to handle the ball a lot more, which made this a little more impressive.
Malik King Can Be A College Player
Frankfort senior wing Malik King is an interesting player who has made strides over the last year. He’s a little more aggressive than he was at this event last season and his jump shot is getting better. Where he needs to improve is in his confidence. When he takes an extra second to think about a play, he can make mistakes but when he just goes the play is usually made. He’s got size and enough handles with some polish to be a pretty good scoring threat in the lane. One to track through his final season.
Central Catholic Has Reloaded, Again
Central Catholic lost a ton from last season with a big senior class. However, like they have done every year, they have reloaded and now have guys like Andrew Page, Jonah Switzer, and Matt Timmons. They have standout sophomore Carson Barrett as well and he showed out last night with a triple-double. This program has athletes that are well coached and they should be able to lock in this year and be a threat again. Having two players combine for 50 points was pretty impressive.
Carson Barrett’s Potential Is High
Over the last two years, we have scouted Barrett a lot and this wasn’t close to his most impressive game but it was maybe his most productive. He scored 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists. Now, Frankfort really couldn’t do much to stop him with their defense but he was still slicing them up. He’s such a smart player that can contribute in so many areas and can overcome a night where he might not have his jump shot while still producing. Potentially, he’s a guy that will draw a lot of college attention. His size at 6’4 with all the skill he has is really attractive to a lot of college coaches. Could see him as a high-end NAIA or DII player with room to grow with some more athleticism and polish on his jumper.
Central Catholic Will Struggle With Lafayette Jeff
Having watched both games last night, you saw a Central Catholic team tear apart a Frankfort team that was terrible on the defensive side of the ball. However, Lafayette Jeff showed last night that they are really good on the defensive end of the floor. LCC scored a ton of points in the paint. Switzer scored 31 with nearly all coming on layups at the rim. Jeff had 6+ blocks in the game, all coming at the rim. LCC will need to see their shooting take a step forward if they are going to beat Jeff. They were only 1/12 from three in this one.
