Charlotte Hoops Challenge-
Friday kicked off the start of one of the Southeast’s biggest high school tournaments, The Charlotte Hoops Challenge ran by Christy Mitchell and Jermaine Walker. The two have been fixtures in Mecklenburg County hoops for some time now and this is their 8th year running the event.
Kody ShubertBattle of the 1-A, Public vs Private-Lincoln Charter handily won the NCHSAA 1-A title last season and The Burlington School is 41-1 over the last 2 seasons including a NCISAA 1-A state championship last season. The two met at The Charlotte Hoops Challenge on Friday night. The Lincoln Charter boy’s would prevail, 65-57 as Presbyterian recruit Kody Shubert scored 23 points and sharpshooter Jackson Gabriel poured in 17 points in the win.
Berry Academy gets past Charlotte Latin-2020 guard Maurice Brown scored 19 points as Berry beat Charlotte Latin on Friday night 74-70.
Victory Christian used a balanced scoring attack to top South Mecklenburg HS 52-40. Victory Christian was led by Nasan Ayala had 16 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Vasileios Gkountopou had 14 points, 5 steals, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists for Victory Christian.
In the big match-up between Gaston Day School and Providence Day, the match-up of two of the best teams in Charlotte didn’t disappoint. Kansas signee Devon Dotson poured in 34 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and dished out two assists, Santa Clara signee Trey Wertz scored 21 points and Isaac Suffren scored 19 points in the win 82-74 for Providence Day. Gaston Day was led by Houston signee Nate Hinton with 19 points, sharpshooter MJ Armstrong with 10 points and College of Charleston signee Quan McCluney with 11 points in the losing effort. One bright spot for Gaston Day was the breakout performance from 6-foot-8 2019 Dami Adelekun as he scored 24 points, pulled down 23 rebounds and had four blocks.

At 8:30, the battle of the Chargers pits Providence Day against Cox Mill High School. Cox Mill features nationally top 20 ranked Wendell Moore from the 2019 class, UNC signee Rechon Black and 2019 W Caleb Stone-Carrawell against Kansas signee Devon Dotson, Santa Clara signee Trey Wertz and the third part of the big three for Providence Day, Isaac Suffren. Cox Mill High School is nationally ranked by USA Today in their Super 25 high school team rankings.
