Big Game Preview: Southeast vs. South
Big Game Preview: Southeast vs, South
WICHITA, Kan. — Things are going to kick off with some serious City League hoops right out of the gate on Thursday when Wichita Southeast visits South..
What’s at Stake:
Lots of pride between a pair of City League teams that have high expectations for the upcoming season. Southeast swept this contest a year ago, winning both the opener, 71-65, and a January rematch, 83-79.
About South
Wichita South is coming off a strong 16-17 season in which the went 16-7 and eventually lost to Lawrence Free State in the playoffs.
However, the Titans will have to replace a pair of talented performers from a year ago in wing Jariah Taylor and guard Malcom Tate, but they have a big building block in 6’8 2018 PF/C Remy Lemovou and 2018 points guard Jamial Pugh.
At 6’3, Pugh is among the city’s most underrated players, while Lemovou is a rim-protecting big man who is shooting up the boards of Division II programs in the region.
About Southeast
Southeast was 11-12 a year ago, but don’t be fooled — they have one of Kansas’ premier players and a talented, deep roster that has plenty of experience under its collective belt.
They are led by 6’5, 190-pound 2018 wing Israel Barnes who averaged 28 points and 8.0 rebounds last season. He has signed to play at Weber State and is coming off a strong season playing for MoKan Elite.
However, the Golden Buffalo have lots of weapons around him this season, including 2020 guard Micah Jacques (6’2), 2019 forward Richard Reed (6’5), 2020 wing Shawn Warrior (6’2) and 2019 shooting guard Johnny Murdock (5’11).
Murdock is among the state’s premier perimeter shooters, while Warrior and Jacques are a talented 1-2 punch in the sophomore class.
