10 Best: Georgetown Prep vs. Springbrook Scrimmage
NORTH BETHESDA, MD — Georgetown Prep hosted Springbrook for a recent preseason scrimmage, and we were in the gym for the five quarter contest. The Blue Devils certainly held their own against the IAC favorites. Here are the 10 best from Saturday morning’s action.
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER | JARED BYNUM | GEORGETOWN PREP ’18
Jared Bynum was the best player on the floor in this contest, and by no means did he play a perfect game. Defensively, he worked hard to apply consistent pressure on the ball and force turnovers. The St. Joe’s commit is undoubtedly influential on both ends of the floor for the Little Hoyas.
BEST OFFENSIVE PERFORMANCE | JARED BYNUM | GEORGETOWN PREP ’18
Bynum was impossible to keep out of the lane, and did well to score or get his teammates easy looks. His exceptional footwork, adeptness at shooting off the dribble, handle, ability to consistently finish in traffic, and exceptional footwork is truly a joy to watch.
BEST DEFENSIVE PERFORMANCE | DEJEAN DESIRE | GEORGETOWN PREP ’19
Dejean Desire deserves plaudits for his defense on Matt Balanc. The long & lanky 6-foot-6 wing denied his man at all times. Desire came up with key defensive rebounds, along with several steals, blocks, and deflections.
BEST SHOOTER | KAMDYN CURFMAN | GEORGETOWN PREP ’19
Not only was Kamdyn Curfman the best shooter in the gym, but as his confidence continues to grow, he is making a case among the top shooters in the DMV as a whole. The high IQ junior has worked hard to improve his pull-up game, and it’s been paying dividends.
BEST HUSTLE GUY | WILL MULQUIN | GEORGETOWN PREP ’18
Will Mulquin‘s contributions often go unheralded, but it was hard to ignore his performance on Saturday morning. The unsigned 6-foot-5 senior came up with a handful of offensive rebounds, blocked shots, and secured several key 50/50 balls with his effort.
BEST REBOUNDER | IKE NWEKE | GEORGETOWN PREP ’18
We didn’t keep a tally, but Ike Nweke might have had close to 20 rebounds in this one. The Columbia commit is a terror on the offensive glass with his second jump and strong hands.
BEST UNDER-THE-RADAR PERFORMANCE | CAMERON RUCKER | SPRINGBROOK ’18
Cameron Rucker quietly had a very good all around performance vs. Prep. The unsigned 6-foot-6 senior scored it well from all three levels, and showcased improved ball handling skills. Rucker is one who always plays hard, and always displays positive body language.
BEST GUY OFF THE BENCH | TIM HAWKINS | SPRINGBROOK ’19
A new who caught our eye in this one was Tim Hawkins. The long & lanky 6-foot-2 junior dominated the third quarter, and made key contributions on both ends of the court for the Blue Devils.
BEST PASSER | MEZIE OFFURUM | GEORGETOWN PREP ’18
We’ve touched on this a bit in the past, but we can’t understate how well Mezie Offurum distributes the basketball. At 6-foot-6, he has the vision and to see over top of defenses. Offurum’s explosiveness and ability off the bounce in conjunction with his unselfishness makes him a unique threat.
BEST STORY TO WATCH MOVING FORWARD
Quinnipiac commit Matt Balanc could put up huge numbers this yearThese two teams have a chance to be among the best in the DMV when it’s all said and done. Both teams are similar in that they each have a chip on their shoulder, and feature feature talented seniors who are ready to lead. It definitely will be intriguing to see how they fare throughout the season.
