Recruiting Report: John Herrick (2018)
With football and basketball opportunities laid out before him, Boone 6’7 forward John Herrick will have a decision to make very soon.
But it seems, for now, that basketball, has taken a front seat for Herrick, who just picked up his first offer from Nebraska NAIA Peru State.
“For football, it’s still kind of up in the air right now. I’m going to Iowa State, Northwest Missouri State and Upper Iowa this fall for visits. Other than that, I’m still up in the air, probably more 75-25 leaning towards basketball, so I’m kind of leaning towards basketball. But, I’m just trying to keep my options open,” said Herrick.
“For basketball right now, I’ve also gotten stuff from Briar Cliff, Sioux Falls, Upper Iowa, and also Penn. I got a message from the Pure Prep coach saying they (Penn) asked about me, and I’m expecting a phone call at some point.”
Herrick elaborated on the Penn inquiry.
“I’m sitting pretty good grade-wise (Penn is an Ivy League school), but they’re showing interest just to see what I have, and I think they liked what I can do athletically.”
Herrick visited Peru State earlier this month, it was then when the coaching staff offered.
“The coaching staff is really nice, I really like their head coach. They have a lot of new equipment, a new coach and new uniforms which is really nice,” said Herrick.
“The players I met were really generous and showed a lot of passion, which I liked. And the coaching staff was new and showed a lot of competitiveness, which I liked.”
With great size, some nice bounce and an increasing versatility to his game, it’s no wonder why Herrick — Iowa’s 24th-ranked 2018 — is increasingly becoming a hot commodity for college hoops coaches.
And he seems determined to make himself an even more valuable prospect over the coming months.
“The thing I’ve been working on the most is my strength, and my ability to use the left hand more. I’ve been doing a lot of individual workouts with coach, working on perimeter shooting and finishing with my left hand,” he said.
“I’ve been getting into the weight room three to four times a week, and I’ve been working on my ball-handling a little bit more.”
