Recruiting Report: Eli Morton (2018)
The 5-foot-10 point guard may not have prototypical size, but he uses what he has to the best of his ability and prides himself on being a lockdown defender and elite distributor.
“Everybody always looks at my height, not everybody is a 5’9, 5’10 point guard, and that’s why I take pride in my defense,” said Morton. “And I just try and use my height to my advantage to my best ability.”
He’s hoping to finish his summer with Division I or high-level Division II offers.
“I’m really looking forward to competing in my last AAU season and making memories,” said Morton. “And because I don’t have any offers right now, my number one goal is to get some offers, at least two to four before my senior season starts: preferably D1 or higher level D2s.”
A tenacious defender and one of the state’s best assists-men, Morton broke down his playing style for PHWA.
“Everybody normally likes scoring and all that, but I like to make the right passes to my teammates; and me being the point guard, I have to make everyone around me better and comfortable,” he said.
“I like to guard the opposing team’s best player, and just score when I need to. I like staying calm, cool and collected.”
“My coach basically wanted me to give the team scoring when needed, and to be a bulldog on defense. And then just lead the team, we only had two seniors this year, and most of the rest were sophomores. So, I just needed to be a leader and do whatever the team needed,” said Morton.
Though he’s played with Northwest Panthers in the past, he says he’s not sure which program he’ll play with this spring and summer. But he’s got options.
“There’s a lot of teams recruiting me (for grassroots ball), so I’m weighing all my options right now,” said Morton.
